The problem is exactly this. A lot of these people only have power because people are too kind to actually cut them out of their lives, because individually they have no value and are usually losers. The weight of personal relationships is used as an "in" to take people's lives for ransom. If everyone sane just broke ties with these people like they try to do with others they wouldn't have a leg to stand on.
