Luke's goal isn't to get revenge on Vader, it's to save the galaxy, which he did by sparing Vader.

Luke was trying to be a good person. He believed that his Father was capable of doing the same. So in the name of being a good boy, he didn't take his Father's life and used his inaction to try and convince his father to come to his senses. It was because they were family and nothing more, but also the Star Wars series always had kinda shite writing that was never meant to be overly deep or philosophical. Just a standard Hero's Journey good vs. evil type thing.

You're missing 2 entire movies where the first one Vader is introduced and kills Luke's father figure, the second one where Luke and Vader fight and Luke loses and has to go improve and heal himself after a huge defeat and then the 3rd where Luke and Vader fight again but Luke is able to defeat Vader but refuses to kill him and follow in his father's footsteps.

TLOU2 is utter garbage in story telling. It be like after Obiwan was killed the second movie focuses on Darth Vader and his missions to wipe out the rebellion with it ending with Luke beating the shit out of him but decides nah, I'm better, after being shown Vader destroying everything he loved the entire movie, then getting his hand chopped off. Luke then doesn't get a robot hand and can no longer use a lightsabre and he just sits at the bottom of cloud city waiting for his friends to come rescue him but never come get him.

It's not just Vader. By RotJ he gives all of his enemies a chance to change their ways before resorting to killing them. He's the most Jedi out of anyone else we've ever seen in the franchise because he treats combat as a last resort. At least until he tries to stab his nephew over bad dreams.

As much as Kasdan is correct in that something has more weight with a death, Lucas is more right because its the end of a trilogy and Luke being made evil or killed off was just pointless, especially if the entire purpose going forward originally was to have Luke vs. Emperor as the culmination (which was eventually phased out by the time RotJ happened). People love to talk about how Lucas had writers to reign him in, but he also reigned them in as well.
