To the user who posted about getting into .Hack

Hi user, if you're reading this the thread archived before i could reply, here's what i was gonna post in your thread.

To anybody else reading, .Hack thread?
Hi user, .Hack is def a fun series to get invested in, Offline MMORPG is right, but that's mainly prevalent in the story, and when you're browsing forums and emails. Otherwise it plays like any other PS2 RPG. I've recently been playing the G.U. collection on PS4 and been having a blast. But the physical copies have gotten expensive as far as i know, so you'd do good to emulate the classic PS2 titles, and play the G.U collection on PC/PS4. Sorry if my reply isn't indepth enough, there's some great reviews on youtube if you wanna know more. TL;DR: the games are great, but expensive, emulate, buy the HD collection.

Found my GU discs the day before yesterday.
Chuffed.
Have a bump.

I personally went the pirate route and burned the games to a disc. As much as I love the series, there's no way I'm going to pay like 300 dollaridoos for IMOQ.

I haven't played the G.U. trilogy (I'm mostly interested in the IMOQ series), but i heard the remasters are pretty good; I hope you'll have fun with them.

still have copies 1 and 2....never played 2. always wanted to get back in and replay all over and just pick up 3 and 4....until i saw the prices for used copies. jesus.

Do you really miss out on game elements if you haven't read/watched? I heard there were codes to levels and stuff that would just go over your head and what not. Its not that I'm disinterested its that the only manga i saw seemed really...shitty..
There was a game and some times people ended up paralyzed or in this tree? There was a giant dragon called the first sin for no reason? Some kid was dead and trapped inside it all along? idk seemed generic.

If you wanna play the original series, IMOQ, I would at least watch the Sign anime. At least for all the callbacks and cameos. Its not necessary though, the games stand alone by themselves. If you wanna play GU you should probably watch Roots considering the games are a direct continuation. Not necessary because the games give you flashbacks, but I'd highly recommend it even if Roots is not nearly as good as Sign as a show.

About how long are each of the original 4 games? Are they all full-length, 50+ hour JRPGs, or are they more 25-30 hour parts like Digital Devil Saga or other games that split one story across multiple parts? I'd honestly prefer the latter.

To add to my last post - no manga or novels are needed to enjoy the games and there's barely any references in the games to them at all.

The original is basically 1 game split into 4 parts, same for GU but with 3 part(4 if you count the remaster). So they're very short and range about 15-25 hours

I couldnt see any of them taking you more than 15 hours, even on a first play through. That's even with doing almost everything each volume has to offer.

The 4 games together are about as long (or a little bit longer) than Persona 3. 100 hours or so if you like to fuck around with extra content.

Beyond what that other user mentioned, you shouldn't forget to watch the corresponding episodes of the four-episode long OVA that came with the games, .hack//Liminality. They tell you what happens in real life while the game is going on.

That's a lot more manageable than I expected. I've always been curious about the series since Sign was originally broadcast, but it seemed like it'd be more of a time sink than I'd want to deal with by the time I was able to emulate PS2 games effectively. Maybe I'll watch Sign and then give these a try.

>Been sitting on the physical games for 4 months now
>Dropped it for a day after loosing 2 hours worth a progress grinding
>Can't ass myself to get back to it even after seeing countless .hack threads

fuck it its not like I have a job or anything going on I'm taking the plunge. ps2 HDD came in sunday so might as well.

Litteraly ripped of dot hacka story

One thing that I should mention is that the games are admittedly a bit dated from a gameplay standpoint, but they're heaven on Earth otherwise if you're into mood pieces/the early 2000s era in general. That atmosphere and general naivete towards technology could be seen as dated, too, I suppose, by some, but if you approach it with an open heart it's 110% soul.

*naivete=attitude

Not the user that you're referring to, but I'm interested in getting into the series. I have the first of the og series and I have the HD GU collection. Would it be an okay plan to play the first game, watch a lets play of the rest of the og series, and then play gu? How important is it to play the og series first? Do the originals hold up?

GU and IMOQ are for the most part separate stories. You won't miss much in GU by not playing IMOQ besides a couple callbacks and cameos.

That's good to know. What concerns me is that the cover to the HD collecion appears to have what looks like an evil version of the protagonist of the first game. That makes me feel like I should have context or that there are strong connections.

>had copies of the first two games
>real fuckin hard to get, but cost the same as any game at the time
>never got my hands on the other two
>never finished the series
>traded them in

I like to practice suspension of disbelief maybe this will be a good exercise thank you user.

It's been like a decade since I played G.U. but IIRC that character's likeness to that of the MC of IMOQ is not because they are the same person. Wouldn't want to spoil you any more than that.

Oh, that's good. Thank you for the info, and I appreciate the lack of spoilers.

God, this thread made me remember just how great the OSTs were to these games.

Bump.

>chink runes
Dammit. I can read just little bits because of the common kanji with moon runes.

Asking cause why not, does anyone know where I can find either an iso or a reasonably priced copy of the korean version of .hack//infection for ps2?

I posted it more for the art (pretty comfy), but yeah, it would be nice to know what they say. Something about a queen or whatever from what I recognized.

...korean version? Is that any different from NTSC-J?

It's a version released after US, and before EU. I'm looking for it mostly for my own personal collection, but also to catalog any potential changes, yeah.

I have no idea where you could find the physical korean release, but reddit has a huge dump of PS2 image files in a pastebin, let me look it up for you.

A queen of darkness apparently
暗の女王
Also Mistral is basically mai waifu in the series, so nice that she is in the foreground.
