The only explanation I have for this is they intended to bring back his boss battle from Brawl but had to cut it and just kind of left his Spirit on the floor with it. It's certainly a simpler explanation than some nebulous conspiracy pointing towards him being playable on the second DLC pass after the base game was completed, but I'd certainly be thrilled with that ludicrous alternative.

Call me crazy, but I still hoping for Porky debut as a playable character. Maybe not on this second pass, maybe on some solo DLC in the future, but his case is really weird. No boss fight, no spirit (even Absolutely Safe Capsule is not the sprite with him inside), no music (Porky's Theme is, well, his army theme). His only """appearances""" are on the helicopter (Fourside) and his big statue on New Pork City. Well, if you can count these as appearances.
I think his moveset would be really unique, and having a antagonist, as well as a past boss being playable would be great.
Also, Sakurai is a big fan of the series and Mother is still popular to this day in Japan.

The spirit/assist trophy thing is dumb because the reality of the situation is that the vast majority of these characters wouldn't even be DLC even if they weren't spirits/ATs. Like why would Nintendo give a shit about protagonists of dead C-tier IPs like Golden Sun or Sin & Punishment or irrelevant side characters like Waluigi, Geno, Krystal, Ashley, etc?
ARMS was basically the one exception because it was a new IP that just missed the boat for the base game, the only other thing that could fall under this is Xenoblade 2. Literally nothing has changed for anyone else.

The fact that he didn't get into the Mother spirit event that happened way after launch confounds me. Seriously, where the fuck is he? There's at least 3 or 4 different Porky spirits they could use but the closest thing to Porky being in is the Absolutely Safe Capsule which I remember reading isn't even the sprite where he enters it.

I think he's had a bit of plastic surgery so his facial expressions on the fly are gonna be a little goofed up. He could read as uncomfortable or stock polite photo smiling. His mouth turns up past the border of his lips and he looks happier if you notice that.
