Because the story (perhaps lore too) is way better than the story and quests in Skyrim and Oblivion. The side/companion quests in Enderal are really well done and the main story while nothing amazing is still leagues above Skyrim and very well presented.
on and off, but it's on my list. i want to start fresh and really get into the story when i have more free time.
Is it worth buying old skyrim just to play this on steam? Been putting it off for a while since you can't get discounts for it anymore.

Yes since you will easily get 40 hours from Enderal if you just rush the main quest and 60-100 if you do the rest.

Yeah, I'm not sure if owning shekels edition also gives you access to Enderal though. A decent number of people seem to prefer SE over LE.

No. I like Enderal, and Nehrim and Arktwend as well, but the lore is definitely not better than Elder Scrolls' lore.
It only works for original skyrim. No point in buying SE.
SSE doesn't give access to the Steam version of Enderal. It's possible to move the original version over to SE, but I've heard it's extremely buggy and breaks a few things completely

I think the devs said they considered an SE version of Enderal, but weren't actively working on it.

Yeah I've beaten it twice (once without, and once with the expansion content). It's really hard to dissent as a FREE GAME, not only because it's FREE but because it's also pretty good.
The only things I don't like are:

I wanted to play Nehrim but all of the dialogue is in German. I thought I would be ok with just having the subs on, but I gradually realised how annoying German is.

These guys are honestly really interesting. They've made 2-3 full game like mods already plus dlc for free. It's perplexing why they don't make their games with an engine like unity or unreal and then sell them.
Go read it. It's great and lefts your devastated, especially after the end of the game.
The ONLY way to truly play this game is if you romance Jespar, as he is the best companion to journey with you and reflect the themes of the story as well as being a more pleasant person than Calia, however, I will say that Calia had a pretty good companion quest.
SureAI is basically done. After enderal most of them were invited to work for THQ Nordic, so forgotten stories are probably their last project.
I tried to but I could never find all the copies of it.
