It's about breaking the cycle of violence. My issue with the story is that it doesn't get to that point particularly effectively, but that is the point.
On the Abby side of the story, her relationship with Lev is written as an intentional parallel to Joel's relationship with Sarah/Ellie, and the point's made that she feels guilty over what she did to Joel, ultimately driving her to let Ellie and Dina go, i.e. now she knows she'll just end up feeling guilty again if she murders Ellie and Dina like she did Joel. It mostly works, but it's kind of messy.
Ellie's side doesn't work as well. The story prods at some interesting ideas - how she's coping with what happened in Salt Lake City and what Joel did, how that effected her relationship with Joel, and how her complicated relationship with Joel effects her motives for going after Abby. The problem is that the story doesn't really find a way to connect those ideas with Ellie's decision to let Abby go.

The most generic revenge plot is one where the protagonist gets revenge. This is a story where neither character can really claim victory and where their quests for revenge destroy them both.

Ellie absolutely took revenge on Abby - if anything, she was worse than Abby because Abby spared Tommy and Ellie, but Ellie ran around Seattle murdering all of Abby's friends.

You got to love Zig Forums saying it's a generic revenge plot and then saying the ending makes no sense because Ellie didn't get her revenge. It's pottery.

Like the first game had a good overall plot. The thing most people liked was the characters and the relationships between them. In Part 2 everyone is a fucking maniac trying to kill the other group without questioning anything.

Also with how they act it is not believable they survived in this hostile world for so long.

Gotta love the generic jrpg plot where the protagonist doesn't kill the antagonist because she doesn't want to become like her.

Wow it sure is summer alright. What you don't understand kid is that this has nothing to do with not wanting to be like her, which is fucking retarded because this isn't batman and joker for Christ's sake. It's not so black and white where it's good guy vs bad guy, they both did fucked up things. She didn't kill her because she knew this would never end and so she made a mature, albeit difficult decision.

No she didn't. She got away with the one she actually gave a damn about. She didn't seem to particularly care about her hit squad whenever they got off'd and most of those were in self defense anyway. Ellie killed people for way less along the way even killing the guy who gave her info on her target. Then she just sorta flip flops at the last second for no reason and basically ends up making the entire fucking trip pointless.
