It's my favorite, it's up there in terms of story. The HUGE maps can be a bit annoying to navigate, but they give a real sense of scale. Also, it was made back when "balance" was more of a loose guideline, so it has some utterly broken stuff, in a fun way

No. The story is loved for the first gen for the political intrigue and because it wasn't afraid to shit on it's cast. Opinions on the actual gameplay are divided due to the fuckhuge size of the maps. You either love it or you hate it and plenty hate it. That being said though the best FE experience comes from Thracia 776 which means you'll still have to play it anyways. If you want the real best FE experience though then you'll want to play games the games that Kaga, the series creator, made after leaving Nintendo. So Tearring Saga, Berwick Saga and so on.

It is great, it has unique mechanics that other FE don't, also the story is top tier.
Its downside are the huge map, it makes the game way slower and if you mess up you have to restart the whole level which is very annoying.
If you are new to the series I find FE6-FE7 to be very balanced in terms of gameplay, story and overall experience with the game. All the lords are shit tho, cept for Hector.
FE9 has the best gameplay and characters but story is kind of shit and is easy to turn Ike into a killing machine to carry you the whole game

FE 5 has the sweet spot for difficulty imo, it's pretty newfag unfriendly, but once you "get" the game it has a decent difficulty. There are more difficult games in the series of course since it's got no higher difficulties really, but I find it rewarding to try lot of different strategies. Any unit can be viable if you force them so it's fairly replayable. You just gotta play FE 4 first because the premise of the FE 5 spoils it.

Isn't a bad thing since it's essentially a few traditional sized chapters one after the other on each map. The only problem is when they force you to walk 15 units, 1 space at a time through a desert or forest.
FE6,7 are the most mediocre and uninspired games in the series. Roy's is a 1:1 copy of marth's. Tellius games are all trash on all fronts.
