Why does this game give me such a strong sense of dread? There’s something about the art style I can’t put my finger on that just gives me this feeling of fear I can hardly describe. The first two games somewhat have the same feeling but it’s 100 times worse in this one. Does anyone relate to this?

You probably have brain damage or something.
Do you have a fear of babies, and Canada.
No, it’s moreso the backgrounds and themes of the levels

I guess it's what this user said
First of all, this game is called Donkey Kong Country 3, Dixie Kong's Double Trouble. See anything interesting? There are 3 letters D in the title. Now, everyone knows that D is the letter of demons, and triple DDD is pretty much the equivalent of 666. Number of the beast, letter of the devil.
So this guy is satan now?
Yes, and they really don't want you to know it. Stay safe.
The tree saw level is legit scary.
YES. That one is probably the worst to me. But also the one with the swarm of bugs that follow you and the poison pipe or whatever
It comes out in the bosses. The giant spider, the living barrel that eats bugs, the evil snowman.
You're jewish, and you're afraid of the inherent brutality of nature. Next.
I love the environments in this game. Something about them is very comfy.
I’m not Jewish
It's the best one.
I wanted to play this so bad after beating DK1 and 2. Seen it on sale at Circuit City a while back. Never got to see it ever again on sale.
Rare was bored sith SNES
Kirby final bosses are usually demons, so it makes sense
Emulators exist
That's what I like about DKC, the games have this gritty and thick atmosphere despite the cartoony protagonists.

i love it.
I need to get around to beating 2 and 3
3 had such a great overworld map
The Donkey Kong Country games are all straight up great looking. I love the artstyle Rare used for them.
It's because every copy of Donkey Kong Country 3 is personalized, and tailors itself to each player in order to scare them effectively.
It might be the way it uses shadows.
Each DKC game had an overhanging tone that permeates throughout most of it though they were careful to never overdo it most of the time.
DKC1 is comfy; being the familiar DK Island home for the Kongs with only stuff like the Kremling factories as the only harsh locations in game.
DKC2 is darker and a bit more haunting with the Kongs in enemy territory with everything being a danger. Even Bramble Blast, as peaceful as it is, is still quietly out to do you in from every angle.
DKC3 by contrast is all about the unknown. There's an air of mystery to most of the game, because its neither home turf nor the enemy's. Sometimes it leans into dread ala Krematoa, other times there's a sense of charming discovery to everything like in the Banana Bird caves.
As good as Returns and Tropical Freeze are, each individual DKC game having its own distinct flavor is something I miss.
For me, it's the bosses that are offputting. One user mentioned in another thread that K. Rool possibly went off the deep end and started inventing bosses when it turned out that goofy eyeball beavers and and supernatural crow ghosts weren't enough to stop the Kongs. Why pretty much every boss SGI render in 3 is menacing is because K. Rool really wants the Kong's dead this time.
DKC3 is comfy as fuck. I just wish they didn't make you rely on turning into faggy animals so much
That's an interesting way to look at it, I see what you mean.
Though iirc, a lot of the enemies 2 onwards looked even more exaggerated and cartoony compared to 1
They were more exaggerated, but at the same time still serious and sinister. I think enemy design is one of DKC3's biggest flaws. Robotic bees, naked Kremlings, and those ugly as fuck rats especially.
