Horror as a genre can’t exist by it self. The moment you label something as straight up horror most people will already know what to expect and there is just nothing new the genre can provide. You have to tack on the horror aspects to other genres to make it work.

We need to go back to defensless horror of games like Amnesia and Outlast. We need to put a bigger focus on story because if there is one genre where story needs to be the first priority it is horror. Horror game developers should be trying to make the player feel as vulnerable and unsafe as possible at all times. It goes without saying but ditch multiplayer as it decreases tension. I also think the horror genre needs less female protagonists.
