God of War (2018)

Thoughts? Beat it for the first time today after dusting off my PS4 for the first time in years. One of the better games I've played in the last decade, felt like a complete game from start to finish, with a satisfying story that is also open ended for a sequel to continue the story.

Gameplay wise I really enjoyed the combat, it has a surprising amount of depth and was very punishing on the difficulty I played on (not the hardest but the second hardest). Really pushed you to your limits with some of the fights such as the Valkyries. The father / son relationship didn't feel so forced, and was actually really fun to watch the boy develop over the course of the game, and one of the least annoying child characters in any video game I've played. mimir also added a lot to the game's story and it was always nice to see the worldbuilding just by rowing around in the boat with him.

Voice acting was also on point, though sometimes I couldn't get Teal'c out of my head anytime Christopher Judge speaks, but he still did a good enough job that most of the time I did forget it was him.

My only real criticisms is that Baldur wasn't developed all that well as an antagonist and he feels absent the majority of the game, and the ending was somewhat anti-climatic, I expected a little more maybe introducing Odin or something but I get why they held off and left that for a sequel.

So what was the consensus on this game? For me it's a very solid 8/10, not something I will probably ever re-play but it was enjoyable almost every second I played it. Only when the combat became frustratingly difficult did I stop having a good time.

It was pretty good
Gonna wonder how they're gonna handle a timeskip if they haven't begun development yet seeing how Atreus' actor is getting older

For me it was a 6/10. I played in give me god of war and it was honestly poorly designed. Maybe if I played on Hard like you it could have been an 8/10.

no platforming, cuck kratos

I decided not to play it on that difficulty despite almost always playing on the hardest because it didn't have the option to change difficulty. Didn't want to get far into the game and discover I had a really hard time beating something and couldn't change the difficulty at all.

That said, the story was easy, not really hard at all, it's the sidequests like the Valkyries that were difficult. Honestly, I don't know how anyone can beat the valkyrie queen on the hardest difficulty, I had to turn the difficulty down a bit just to beat her in my playthrough, and I was using fully upgraded weapons, armor, everything from the mist realm.

Pretty much my favorite ps4 exclusive. Solid single player game, no dlcs, no paying for skins or whatever like gow 3 and ascension. Combat takes some time to get used to but once you get the hang of it you can really become a god. 9/10

Also it has replay value, unlike spider-man

i like it. i hope the sequel is greatly improved. more enemies, gore, and not having the ending completely rushed. seriously, that last baldur fight felt out of pace with how the story was going.

huh? just learn to dodge her moves. she does everything the lesser valkryies do. after my 3rd death, i starting goofing off, trying to see which abilities made her flinch and stuff. she's a real bullet sponge.

Gmgow is clearly meant for NG+

Kratos will probably die to Thor if Atreus is at least 18 in the next one

Yeah, the ending did feel a little rushed, I don't know why but I was expecting more to the story after I spread the mother's ashes, but then it just sort of ended and while it was a decent ending it just felt like there was more to come.

Yeah, I realized that too late. I was so frustated by the end that I didn't bother with a NG+.

I think both lack in replay value. Once I finished GoW, I had zero desire to play it ever again. Something about it just bored me.

There's nothing new in Spider-man's NG+. At least in GoW you get new armors, shield designs and you can upgrade your stuff even further.

It's pretty good. I think they nailed the combat and made it more visceral and engaging than in past games where square square triangle with OP magic was king. The closer camera also put emphasis on positioning and how you used the boy to eliminate your blind sides.

I think the story presentation was pretty good. Highlight was definitely Kratos' writing and acting. Like he actually does carry around all the weight from the previous games. They really nailed that because I was certain GoW3 had ruined Kratos beyond salvage. But they incorporated that very neatly in GoW4.

The game dissapoints in set pieces and boss fights. These are GoW hallmarks and I feel this game disappointed severely here. The starting fight with Baldur was the boss highlight. And then when you go back to grab your blades of chaos. But other than that, the game was surprisingly low-note of character. I hope for a sequel they dare more with set pieces and bosses. And t he score by McCreary was disappointing as it fell too hard on forgettable tracks instead of the overly bombastic scores of the Greek games.

Overall, absolutely a good game worth playing. It pays respects to older games (same director as GoW2) but also reinvents itself enough to make it a whole new fresh game.

Really liked it, best gameplay in the series imo when if the camera is fucked

Barlog isn't gonna kill Kratos
He actively refused to keep Kratos dead after GoW 3 because to him, there is no GoW with no Kratos

i did not like it.
The tacked on rpg shit was awful. So you meet a draugr slightly higher level than you and the fucking god of war goes down like a pussy? Come on. Speaking of which, awful enemy variety. Not just in terms of bosses (the 12 recoloured trolls were bad as is) but regular trash mobs as well.
The level design... I dont see the benefit of this hub centric design, it just makes the game feel tiny, when its meant to be this grand adventure. But worse than that, the auto platforming is fucking atrocious, and the game doesnt even TRY to put proper obstacles in your way. Kratos can jump 2 stories high normally yet now he's regularly blocked by tiny fucking rocks and bushes.
Then there's the camera. Instead of zooming out during combat a bit, it insists on remaning up close, forcing you to rely on guide arrows quite often. And, dont get me started how they did away with the far away camera when you are scaling huge bosses or set pieces. That was one of the best things about the early games.

The story spends the last 2 hours sequel baiting. Atreus' acting like a cunt and then going back to normal like nothing happened within 1 hour was bad writing. There's barely anything developed outside of Kratos and Atreus' relationship. That several hour long stretch when you got to the Elves' realm is a prime example of it.

What I did like was the feel of the combat, the graphics and Kratos' performance. But outside those things, I found it incredibly lacking compared to the previous titles.

Cory Barlog is on the same arc as Neil Druckmann was. I've never liked GoW but fans are gonna get fucked by the next game

Kratos' demise is all but confirmed in GoW4. Look up the design of the World Serpent. Reminds you of someone?

Kratos dying is a GoW tradition though. I think GoW4 is the only mainline game where he doesn't die?

Forgot to add I really liked Mimir even if he only existed for exposition

Wait, they didn't start development? How do you know that?

Do I miss something here ?

I said "if"

Doesn't Kratos defy fate all the time?
Hell, Ragnarok has Thor's sons surviving prophesied
Its why Modi freaks the fuck out when Magni dies

Its Kratos dying in Atreus' arms

You see Kratos' face is being bashed in (probably by Thor) and Atreus spits out the world serpent in despair. The world serpent bears Kratos' traits and it's possible Kratos simply lives on as the World Serpent. The serpent also tells Mimir something in GoW4 which shocks him but he keeps as a secret.. I think there were more hints of Kratos dying but I can't remember..

i agree with a lot, especially the lacking set pieces and boss fight spectacles. literally the only memorable fights were the first baldur fight, the dragon on the mountain, the first time i fought a wolfman and a traveler. the first two valkyrie fights, and then the queen.

you can change difficulty during the game.

Also Sony probably gonna go over budget on GoW5 so hard it will make TLOU2 look like an indie title. GoW4 defied all their sales expectations and became one of PS4's top selling games. GoW4 also went through suppposed development hell and what we play were actually done in fairly short dev time from rumors.
