People may joke, but the judgements and worldview people have to adopt in order to justify their lifestyle can take a lot out of people mentally. It's much easier to retreat into smaller circles of likeminded people, and to push out anyone who contradicts those beliefs. Strangely enough, people in these kinds of circles have a common enemy among religious communities while having the same type of system, but having polar opposite lifestyles.
