Video games peaked from roughly 2010 to 2013. With the exception of 2017, gaming has been on a steep decline.

Based. 2017 was the best year of gaming for the 8th gen.
No, you actually just got old. Find another hobby or keep playing the same shit you played forever.
No, every time there's a recession gaming (and movies) become more risk averse.
Sorry zoomzoom, your childhood is shit and your generation will be treading shit for another two decades.
>Games peaked with the 7th gen.
You are literally everything wrong with this industry, and the embodiment of what Zig Forums was formed to avoid. There is literally nothing more cancerous to this industry as you are. You need to leave.
Name 5 games in those three years that caused that peak
>Sorry zoomzoom, your childhood is shit and your generation will be treading shit for another two decades.
I'm sorry, kid, but you seriously try to say that when you are actually praising the seven gen era?
REALLY?
The golden age of videogames was '94 to '04.
2010:
> Fallout: New Vegas
> Red Dead Redemption
> Deadly Premonition
2011:
>Dark Souls
>Portal 2
>Skyrim
2012:
> Journey
> Super Hexagon
> The Walking Dead
2017:
> Breath of the Wild
> Divinity: Original Sin II
> Nier: Automata
Mmmmm....
Sounds about right.
'01 is when I think we started the decline. That's when gaming really got big, games had to appeal to more people, publishers got more influence, developers couldn't take as many risks, MS showed everyone that you could be successful if you marketed your shit the right way, a bunch of kids got an xbox and started praising Halo and its multiplayer...
We still had good games in the following years, but that was the beginning of the end for gaming as a more esoteric and creative hobby.
2004 was the peak and it was downhill from there
mid 90s to mid 2000s seems about correct
The more prosperity there is the more studios are willing to take a chance on innovative shit.
In times when there's a recession (9/11, housing crash, and now corona) you get nothing but remakes, remasters, and copies of copied copies.
89-93 for 2D, 98-02 for 3D
Honorable mentions: 87, 96, 05, and 07
Holy fucking brainlet! The 7th gen was the dark ages of gaming. The 8th gen has been a massive redemption arc for the industry.
Based. 7th gen apologists need to go piss up a rope. Anyone who grew up with 6th gen and earlier knows that the 8th gen was a return to form after the abomination that was the 7th gen.
Peaked with empire earth 12-11-2001
1211 as we true gamers call it ,
>The more prosperity there is the more studios are willing to take a chance on innovative shit.
You are literally talking about the Brown'nBloom, dude-bro shooter, death of mid range gaming, Beth and Bioware RPG's, QTE's, cinematic 30 FPS, death of niche genres, the most egregious DLC pratices, MMORPG fever, pure push for console gaming.
Are you an IDIOT?! It's the era with LITERALLY the least variety and risk taking in the entire history of the medium.
Zoomers that grew up on PS360 are fucked in the head. They will come to be known as the lost generation of gamers because they grew up on such a dogshit generation that it irrevocably fucked up their sense of taste.
>12-11
>In times when there's a recession (9/11, housing crash, and now corona) you get nothing but remakes, remasters, and copies of copied copies.
Serious question: Do you have a diagnosed medical cognitive disorder?
Because if you don't, you seriously need to get yourself checked. You are quite literally retarded, to a point that is not even funny. You might be genuinely a threat to yourself and others.
Videogames started being shit after 2007, just like everything else
>In times when there's a recession (9/11, housing crash, and now corona) you get nothing but remakes, remasters, and copies of copied copies.
So, first of all: did you forget the 2008 economic recession in the middle of this?
Second of all: did you not realize that games take on average between 1.5 and 2.5 years to release, and corona has been literally around of mere months - meaning that it is literally impossible that it would be affecting the games that are coming out NOW?
2010 is literally the when the industry was MOST affected by an economic recession in it's entire history: it's the time when games being released were formed by the poor economic situation of 2008.
So even by your own retarded reasoning, the time frame you have listed would be still literally the worst the industry could ever have been.
This thread is embarrasing even by Zig Forums's standards. Hey OP, are you by any chance the same people how posted that unpopular opinion that singleplayer games are not games earlier?
I refuse to belive there are multiple people this fucking stupid around here. That is just a statistical impossibility.
>le 2017
breath of the wild represents everything wrong with modern gaming though
For me peak was until the XBOX360/PS3/WII gen
Probably because i don't like online and prefer local plays.
I can't wait to be here in 2030 and see posts about how games peaked in 2020-2024 and everything after was just political nonsense and cash grabs.
Where were you on 12-11 brother?
Dark Souls, Red Dead Redemption, Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas, M&B Warband
get fucked lol
While it was normal that people have a nostalgia for gaming from the era of their youth - praising the 7th gen is a very special kind of stupid. Especially here.
When I see people arguing whenever the peak was 1994-1999, or 1999-2004, it's quaint and mostly just a matter of aformentioned nostalgie.
However, 7th gen was literally the objectively, by far THE worst time in gaming history. That whole "Zig Forums hates videogames" attitude around here? That is because of the 7th gen in the first place. That whole "what will be the next TORtanic?!" thing? 7th gen.
People might argue whenever things were better in 2015-2017, or 2017-2020 in a few years, and both sides will probably have some reasonable points to make.
But anyone who says that 7th gen was the peak is just an absolute idiot. There is no excuse to that through age or nostalgia. If you genuinely think 7th gen was good, then you are an awful, AWFUL person, you are wrong, and tash. Period. People have never been as mistreated by the industry as they were at that time.
Make an argument for why 7th gen is shit without resorting to muh feels or muh nostalgia
Dark Souls is the only good game on this list. Everything else is normie Redditcore brown and bloom tripe.
Because it was the peak of centralization and normiefication.
> Centralization:
Smaller studios were going out of business and getting bought up left and right, and an unprecedented amount of power of control was vested in the hands of a few big AAA publishers. This trend reversed in the 8th gen as more indie and AA studios were opened and digital distribution lowered the barrier of entry to publish a game.
> Normiefication:
The 7th gen came out right around the time that normies were flooding into gaming and publishers were suddenly realizing this could be a big business on par with movies and music, not just a hobby for kids and nerds. They responded by trying to position their games for a more "mature" and "casual" audience. This manifested in various ways including making things more dumbed down and handholdy, making games needlessly edgy and dark both graphically and thematically, brown and bloom, piss filters, the dawn of "cinematic" games, and many others. This trend also reversed in the 8th gen as they realized people actually like color and adults will gladly play cartoony games like Overwatch, and there's still a large audience for challenging games as proven by Dark Souls and indies.
Overall the 8th gen has been a massive improvement over the 7th. I can't take people seriously who say that gaming is going downhill. It's like they all collectively got amnesia and forgot how garbage the 7th gen was.
Do unironically think the 2000s weren't full of edge shit and massive dumbing down? This has to be bait or a zoomzoom
I mean, the 7th gen started in 2005 with the release of the 360. So yeah, it was in the 2000s. Before that there were a few edgy games like PoP Warriror Within, but it didn't explode into the whole industry until the 7th gen. The 6th gen was more of a continuation of the 5th gen while the 7th gen represented a cataclysmic shift in what types of games were being made.
True for AAA games. Then like 2008-2012 was HL2 mods. Then after that indie games. They each had their own little golden ages, but they all seem to be in a slump now for different reasons. Hoping VR keeps improving and can bring another golden age.
