Nop, you are right. Zodiac is even more "locked" than the original because of the new license board and class system. I also highly recommend it because the classes makes the game more balanced and more fun.

It still baffles me when people complain about this game not having a real protagonist when it makes it clear many times the focus is the world itself, nations, conflicts and the lore. The gang are just catalysts who happened to meet each other and all have something in common.
It's not my favorite game in the franchise for sure but I'll always consider it the biggest pleb filter in FF history because you can clearly tell people didn't even bother paying attention to what the game was telling them
