Sorry for the 8 billionth The Last of Us 2 thread, but hear me out.
The Last of Us 2's fan reception might improve in the future. I'm not saying that because I like the game, I haven't played it yet. It's just a trend I often witness for any polarizing sequel. Whenever a sequel becomes divisive, the fans eventually warm up to it a few years later.
Here are some examples: - MGS2 - GTA4 - Halo 2 - Thief 3 - Silent Hill 4 - DMC4 - Max Payne 3 - Far Cry 2
Probably, people need to justify their purchases somehow.
Alexander Perry
I remember when Thief fans hated Deadly Shadows. When the Teef reboot came out, fans began to warm up to the third game.
Sebastian Carter
Is this the Batman v Superman of games?
Camden Diaz
yeah nah OP
play the game and witness the writing for yourself bad writing is still bad even if its 10 years old
Anthony Wood
I don't think so, because a lot of people still hate that movie. It still managed to get a cult following.
Dylan Long
It had pretty good reception when they released the director's cut on blu-ray. So maybe same thing doesn't apply here.
Bentley Taylor
It's not that they warm up to them, it's that they grow up and stop thinking like kids. Take this guy for example. He's just regurgitating the same tired old shit he's been hearing thrown out at him by e-celebs that he looks up to rather than thinking for himself.
David Nguyen
the fuck is that list? only one of them is a movie game with the addition of actual gameplay. last of us doesn't even have gameplay.
James Cox
>Might improve It already has. The overwhelming majority of the public doesn't care about the online backlash because all you retards did is constantly post MS Paint edits and reply with spoilers on Twitter. The number of people online who were genuinely going to pick up the game on launch and didn't after they saw the spoilers/edits has gotta be less than a thousand, because who fucking cares?
Daniel Young
I have not read or watched the leaked info and went into this game with "open mind". After finishing the game I had one thing to say... writing in this game is literally trash. I don't mind killing off few characters here and there. I don't mind how the ending for that game was rushed. I played it, loved the gameplay, with some issues how big maps were, but the story... that was really bad.
Just play it and you will see how bad structured story in this game is. Also, there's so much dumb plot holes left and right, it's amazing. That's what you get for letting write a story by a person who thinks first game was sexist...
Sebastian Torres
>- Far Cry 2 lol
James Hernandez
Sorry bro, but you're wrong. I tried to enjoy the game, but the writing is bad. Amateur in parts even and demonstrably so. Normally I wouldn't care, but this being a game that seems to pride itself on its writing (legacy from the previous entry) makes it unavoidable. It's simply bad. Whoever wrote it needs to seriously look into how to make characters interact in a way that shows their development, motivation, and relationships. TLOU2 does a pretty bad job at this. The end result is that the player just doesnt care about whats happening to them or doesnt believe that they would be acting the way they are or making the decisions they do.
I liked Abby by the way. Her part with Lev and Yara was pretty great. But overall, she exists in a terribly written story.
Juan Perry
Did Halley Gross really call the first game "sexist"?
Wyatt Nelson
Batman parts were genuinely hilarious though. It's so goddamn bad I want more of it.
Tyler Powell
In 1803 critics and knowledgeable audiences across Europe called Beethoven's Eroica symphony among the worst piece of music ever written.
...it also began the Romantic period of music. Critics enthusiastically hating a piece of art is historically a good indication that the work is substantial. Critics loving a piece of art is historically a good indication that the work is mediocre and unadventurous.
Carson Jackson
>Will the same happen to TLoU2? no. the sales are front loaded because this is the PS4 at its peak and it's full of mindless drones. once the fanboys fuck off there will be nothing but hate. the game will never do as good as the first game.
Luke Phillips
Not really. This game should be part 3.
Second part should be about Ellie learning that Joel lied to her.
I can't believe that all those fanboys are still wetting their god damn beds just because they killed Joel. Fucking retarded chimps. So stuck in their primitive tribalism that they literally couldn't empathize with Abby if they dared to even try, and thus the entire point of the story goes right over their god damn heads.
Jace Scott
none of these games had hardcore propaganda even if you combine them TloU II still wins even if youre an alienated liberal sodomite the plot still fucking sucks almost everyone hates it to the point theyll start pretending the last of us never got a sequel
Wyatt Long
This. Part 2 should have been Ellie and Joel drifting apart after she finds out the truth while introducing us to Abby.
Maybe have them team up and bond over their daddy issues or something.
Jordan Davis
no it doesn't
Ayden Young
Not really. I mean sure we understand that Ellie wants to get revenge for Joel's death. But her revenge consists of travelling hundreds of miles slaughtering hundreds of innocents, dogs, putting herself into ridiculous survival situations in infected infested tight spaces. Not only that but her girlfriend (also badly written relationship btw) who she is pretty akward around at the time when Joel dies, agrees to accompany her and help her in her endless bloodlust because 'theres no way id let you do this on your own'. And then later, her other friend (who we know next to nothing about) just shows up out of nowhere and had been following them, clearly hes some kind of super soldier to make it that far by himself, only to die and we're like 'oh well hes dead now i guess, we dont realy know him that well so who cares really'. Any way I digress.
Contrast Ellies pointless bloodlusting serial killing murder spree across the country with the Joels motivation for killing in the first game. Joel is willing to kill people to get Ellie to the Fireflies because it might save the human race. That's a pretty strong motivation.
>Character development Sure there is development, but its contrived It's basically : Ellie is angry, Ellie becomes a serial killer, Ellie realizes that violence is bad because other people are people too. Again contrast this to the first game. Joel is a violent smuggler, pretty much a nihilist, the world is fucked and people suck. Throughout his journey with Ellie he undergoes a transition into a loving father. This development is facilitated effectively through the talented writers that scripted his dialogue with Ellie throughout the game. That's what good writing does.
Unfortunately this sequel doesnt have that.
And I like it btw, I would give it a 6.5 or 7 out of 10. The themes are consistent throughout.
Gabriel Parker
Are people complaining about the writing autistic and retarded "video game story experts" who simply say it's "bad" and then literally nothing else? Can someone link a video or something tangible?
Zachary Sanchez
>video game story experts >video game a story is a story you nonce a well written story is a well written story a badly written story is a badly written story
Oliver Rodriguez
How do you make a whole game out of that? The way it was handled here was perfect (Ellie obviously knows more than she's letting on but we don't find out whether she knows everything until halfway through)
Mason Gutierrez
This is EXACTLY what I mean. You simply say it's bad but don't list any reasoning or provide any evidence.
Josiah Thomas
And people's likes aren't universal, so don't try the "it's bad for me it must be bad for you" logic here. It has to OBJECTIVELY bad. As in NOT LOGICAL.
Ethan Gonzalez
I like going prone so I can see Ellie's ass jiggle
Mason Anderson
Neil was story writer for second part... he said it.
Nicholas Roberts
It's this gen's GTA4. Highly praised for "more mature writing" but not actually that compelling to justify the praise.
Michael Edwards
Jesus. You guys have tried every single trick in the book to shill this game.
No. It will be remembered as Mass Effect 3, a mediocre corporate sequel filled with SJW shit and paid reviews.
Cooper Ross
A well written story usually has believable character motivation, genuine and relatable character development, meaningful dialogue that explores relationships between characters, and a well structured sense of momentum.
Badly written stories usually lack these element and the result is often a lack of depth or sense of belief, or a lack of empathy with the characters. Not all characters in TLOU2 suffer from this, again I liked Abby's story. But the rest of them do suffer from this.
There are good writers and bad writers user, this is why everyone and their mother isn't a writer.
Video games usually get a free pass on this because the focus is usually on gameplay and having fun. But a story heavy game like this should not be given a free pass.
Henry Moore
OP here.
I'm not shilling for the game. I don't even plan to buy it, unless its price drops significantly. I wasn't even a fan pf the first. This is just an observation.
Elijah Thompson
Thanks for the textbook definitions of good and bad writing. I'm still waiting for someone to show me how OBJECTIVELY TERRIBLE the writing is.
Oliver Gray
We have barely had e-celebs truly shitting on the story. Wait until /ourguy/ matthewphimosis makes it the new Bioshock Infinite. Also, it's closer to something like Zero Time Dilemma than to MGS2.
Liam Hernandez
This is coming from a guy who hasn't played either of the games and doesn't know or care WTF either of them are about. Show me objectively bad writing or you're all autistic self-proclaimed video game writing experts.
Landon Scott
>TLoU2? the same that happened to DMC2, Ace combat assault horizon Thief Remake Prince of persia Forgoten sands Silent hill Homecoming Halo 5
Nathaniel Price
>show me how OBJECTIVELY TERRIBLE the writing is. Have you played the game? The objectivity of the bad writing is proven by its LACK OF GOOD WRITING - the elements of which were presented to you.
Why don't you tell us why you think the writing is good?
Levi Ortiz
fuck no, wasting an entire game leading up to joels death is awful, joel should have died in tlou 2 like he should but just later on and with more emotional build up with ellie so people wont chimp out, tlou 3 should be ellie starting new life reuniting with family and have a decent ending rather than that depress shit in tlou2
Caleb Myers
The difference is that those games aren't divisive. Most just hate those games.
John Lee
TLOU 2 is not filled with SJW, why won't you understand, i don't like that shit too but you are just blindly ranging from leaks and Zig Forums echo chamber
Christopher Bennett
I lost interest. Like I said I don't know or care about this game but there's no way the writing is really as awful as you autists make it out to be. Never gonna play anyway so whatever.
Jayden Hill
Max Payne 3 and Silent Hill 4 are still largely disliked, and I'm not sure why you think GTA4 counts, if anything it's the exact reverse of that trend.
Evan Ward
You know it isn't as simple as that. The game is genuinely divisive. Responses range from "greatest game narrative of all time" to "it was interesting but flawed" to "it ruined the franchise". We can't dismiss any of these. It's interesting to analyse it and figure out why it landed so well with some and so badly with others. (Considering how important a theme empathy was in the game, it's ironic that each camp can't seem to relate to the others.)
Personally, it hit me harder than anything else I've come across. It reminded me why I play video games, what they are capable of. It's been days and this fucking game won't get out of my head. It's my new reference point and everything else I compare it to falls short. I almost wish I hadn't played it, because it's pretty much ruined everything else.
And I don't consider myself easy to please in this regard. There are some very highly regarded story-driven games that I haven't been impressed by at all. I'm not the type of person who loves everything and can't accept criticism.
So please trust that I'm not a brainless uncultured sheep or whatever, and that the above was my honest reaction to the game. Try to consider how we could feel so differently about it.
