Material is just unfeeling, uncaring atoms and the thing that separates us from just being lumps of flesh is the connections we have to the people and things in our lives, and how those are remembered and translated into new experiences for others.
Games are a connection to the experiences we have and want to share and anyone who says that getting emotional over that makes you lesser probably has a life that doesn't contain a lot of emotional connections. Which is very sad for them indeed.

I’ve cried a few times during multiplayer games where I’ve been drinking and lost horribly.
The only real time I was saddened by a campaign game was RDR1’s ending. The epilogue where you play as John’s son made me lose any desire to play the game. I figured they wanted to give players a chance to go back and finish missions or gather collectibles, but the ending shook me too hard to care.
