3 is a lot more lacking in comparison to NV, but it's still a relatively good game, and the transition to NV once you've finished 3 will that much better.

If you like RPGs, New Vegas. If you like looter/shooters, 3. They’re both good in their own way, even if 3 is only technically a Fallout game.

NV is a solid RPG, 3 is a shooter in an RPGs engine. I've tried to play 3 at least 4 times, and had gotten bored before I was near finished. I've played through New Vegas at least 10 times.

If you just want a good experience do New Vegas first. It's the more polished and fleshed out of the two. If you like it maybe try Fallout 3, though be prepared to be a bit underwhelmed (also be ready to run around in sewers. A lot.)

While this user is right that 3 has a more interesting wasteland to explore (that was Bethesda’s speciality), NV is superior in terms of player choice in many aspects (character sheet, faction options, load outs, perks) that appeals to RPG fans.

Going back to 3's nonsensical ammo, lack of ADS, percentile based speech checks, limited weapons, and dozens of copy-paste subways is agonizing after experiencing New Vegas, and I really like Fallout 3. I like how Megaton works well as a hub from which to embark until you hit Rivet City, I like how the wasteland is utterly hostile yet scales the threat level, I like the occasional really strong questline, but New Vegas is such a stronger experience, even vanilla, that there's no way to try and play 3 after NV with anything but unfavorable comparisons.

Bought it years ago on steam, played less than an hour since it kept crashing. Wish I could refund it since I barely played it, but nope. I do hear that it's available on GoG and it runs pretty much flawlessly since it has built in patches. Will probably buy it from there.
