Goddamn this game feels good during racing. I think it even trumps FZero gx in terms of speed and handling. No need to do any weird drifting shit, the cpu actually doesn't rubberband or cheat, hp isn't directly tied to boost power, etc.
SW Racer and FZero GX are both the only racing games that actually feel like you're going fast, maybe XG2 or HSX come close, but nothing can top either. SWRacer edges fzero out in terms of sheer speed feel. Content wise, fzero can't be beat, though, granted it was for a different system.

I think older games couldn't really rely on spectacular imagery that current games take advantage of, so they had to make the player really FEEL like they're controlling a fast rickety vehicle bobbing and weaving through dangerous circuits not really sure which way to go, rather adding post processing to make it LOOK fast. You can feel a difference between going 450mph vs 620mph, and with the right amount of traction, turning, accel, and air brakes, you can blow through every track in no time.
Only thing that sucks are the shortcuts. Looking at you Abyss.

Yeah Ep1 racer was pretty cool.

Why in god's name they decided to turn the sequel into a kart racer, I'll never know.

I think there's a very good argument to be made for Ep1 Racer having the best mechanics of a racing game ever.

It's damn near perfect honestly and there's so much nuance with the pod racer controls/systems and setup that I swear i've been experimenting for the better part of two decades and i'm still discovering new stuff.

Was this the original NFS underground?

Yeah I definitely agree, while it's incredibly nuanced, it's also incredibly simple to understand.
You can go really fucking fast yet feel totally under control for the most part. That shit is hard to get right normally, but here it is working perfectly on the n64

I would love to see a 2nd of this on todays hardware

And the same devs. Or at least some that understand how the original game was developed. There were some follow-ups and like that ps2 game but it was fucking ass.

My only wish was that the ai was smarter and more competitive. I remember there only being a few tracks where they could keep up once you picked up some speed.
Is it worth picking up on the switch over the pc version? The one thing I saw was you can do the twin handle controls with the motion controller, which seems like a fun gimmick but not something I'd use much.

It's a fucking bitch to run it on a modern PC, and I don't really see any advantage, since it's an old game, so even switch must be able to handle it at 60fps and since it's not a car simulator there's no point in playing it with a wheel or a joystick, if anything the dual handle sounds more like it was in the movie. I'd go with the switch version, unless you find out it somehow only runs at 30fps.

Why doesn't this have multiplayer ?

I was dissapointed this wasn’t a remake or remaster. Loved this game on the N64 in a way I don’t really love other racing games. Do a race. Hit up the scrap yard and look for batteries and shit. Upgrade pod. Do another race and get fucked by the same guy each time. It felt like I was actually racing aliens not AI.

Episode I Racer to this day remains one of my all time favorite video games. People said it already, but it manages to capture the feelings of speed and control in a way very few other racers or, hell, vehicle games in general ever could.

EA will do a VR version.
EA will save the gameindustry, fuck yeah.

Interesting. Should I shell out 15 bucks to play it on my CS4 Pro?

Total fucking chads in this thread. I love EP1 racer. For me, it’s Boles Roor

I don’t understand boost mechanics. I boosted exactly once by accident and couldn’t do it again.

I think a lot of the merit of the speed feeling falls on the podracers concept and then the excellent execution of animations and handling.

You really feel like these things are about to fall apart with the slightest bump at those speeds. Just tying your seat to a pair of plane turbines is as an excitingly stupid idea as it gets.

This was my game back then, still didn't really understand how to race and eventually reached a level where I was stuck for the longest time. Shame the N64 emulator on the Wii can't display the game correctly to play it again

This.

The air control, which you can even use on the ground, the drifting, the boost mechanics......oh god the boost mechanics, the repairing, the ability to twist and pivot and the general handling, sensation of speed etc all make for wild ride.

Just get it on PC, the port was terrific and it's easily the best version.

>Why doesn't this have multiplayer ?
Wut?

>install pc version
>can't maneuver inside antigrav tunnels no matter how i map the controls causing me to eat every single piece of debris and lose the race unless i have a considerable advantage
>emulate n64 version
>exact same fucking problem

feels like god himself doesn't want me to play this game

What controls are you using?

PC version supports a 360 pad natively and i've never had any issues with it.

works perfectly on my PS4

i tried every conceivable controller and keyboard setup

haven't installed it on this computer yet though, might give it another shot

did you know the pc version had cinematics?

also some madman recreated podracer in UE4

If it's of any help this what my control setup for a 360 pad looks like.

thanks, will look into it

Hardcore Fzero gx fan here, I completely agree with you. I wish I could play the PC version, but the audio is skullfucked for some reason

If I made a game very similar to this without the star wars ip would you guys play it?

Attached: Screen-Shot-2019-05-14-at-8.59.29-AM.png (492x571, 354.64K)

sure why not

Every version but N64 had cinematics and music that played throughout the race, not just on the last lap.
