Which Castlevania is considered the best?

dawn of sorrow
By the general public is probably SOTN.
I'm not that big on the Metroid styled Castlevanias, so my favorite is either Rondo of Blood, or Super Castlevania 4.
Probably 4, fucking love the music and the whip dangle
I love this
The Lecarde Chronicles 2 is the best Igavania, it drops levelling for equipment only, it feels like they took Simon's Quest and made the game that should have been in terms of levels/core gameplay. Some of the bosses/scenarios were legitimately chilling too. I still think you could make a better game, but it was made on no budget as a fan game. Makes me want CaslteMania, helmed by Migami.

I really like this theme, I think it was from Castlevania the Adventure initially.
For classicvanias, any opinion except saying 2 or one of those forgotten game boy games is valid.
For IGAvanias, any opinion except Harmony of Dissonance or Circle of the moon is valid.
Nobody cares about the 3D games.
It's rare that the most popular is actually the best. It's unlikely the lowest common denominator has even played RoB and seen how good it is. SC4 is more widely accepted to be the best but it's a fucking terrible game in comparison.
>or one of those forgotten game boy games is valid.
hey the second one (belmont's revenge iirc) is quite good and has a great OST. just a bit on the short side
Yeah, I played and beat II relatively recently. It's pretty good for a portable title and I like the idea of mega man style stage progression but I just thing it pales in comparison to the console Castlevanias a bit too much.
SOTN is objectively the best. The others are just nostalgia shit. Nothing after SOTN applies.
classic: Rondo of Blood
metroidvania: Aria of Sorrow
>Circle of the moon
one of the top 5 games in the series. unironically pleb filtered.
Nah bro it's really not that good.
Classic: usually either III or Rondo
IGAvania: SoTN by nostalgiafags and AoS by most other people
Also imo Rebirth is underrated as fuck
The only worthwhile post.

The main menu for the N64 Castlevania is pure kino, shame that the rest of the game doesn't live up to the menu, and that it's theme is just ripped from Rondo of Blood anyway
>series reboot designed to reorient the series for the 3d generation
>about as much effort and thought put into it as the low effort rondo of blood port on the snes
Why do they both have kino versions of Bloodlines in them?

Fuck that shit, the series never recovered past this point.
I'm curious, as a fan of Castlevania am I the only one who feels that Castlevania videogames should DROP the stupid timeline?
Just make a game about whatever hero you want coming to fight famous movie monsters AND mythological monsters. I don't need no Belmonts (and this series has done a chunk of Non-Belmonts being the playable heroes). And I don't even need Dracula's Castle as a mandatory element (and a chunk of the games also do different levels that aren't Dracula's Castle itself notably Bloodlines).
I like the concept of Castlevania but that damn timeline has done too much damage to the series if you ask me.
You speak as if we'll ever get a new Castlevania game. Never forget who owns this, Konami will never make a legitimate game again. Even their most recent game that rip off of Medi Evil with the skeleton protagonist was not actually made by Konami.
>>character abilities locked behind random enemy drops
i agree yhis is a flaw, and the game is far from perfect, but i prefer it to sotn which is way too easy, even without particularly strong weapons. and the inverted castle is just bad. also worse bosses
is bloodlines any good?
>Rebirth
my fuckin nigga

Bloodlines is rad and better than IV if you can live without the 8 direction whip desu.
Yes
>tfw the best track was unused

I'm still mad
There are some flaws in Bloodlines:
- That stupid annoying boss in the tower. God lord that horrible EAR RAPE sound that it makes.
- The golem boss fight sucks as you literally slowly hack away his tower like body.
- The gear monster boss. Doesn't even feel like a fitting Castlevania boss given it's just a bunch of gears.
I cannot say I enjoy being forced to re-fight all the bosses again like this was some kind of Mega Man game.
A lot of people will say RoB but III is easily the best Castlevania
>make a bomb ass remix of Christopher's proper theme
>"nah put in Reincarnated Soul instead"
Konami will Konami but hey at least they had the decency to release the track so we may listen to it. I wonder if it would be possible to hack that back into Rebirth somehow.
I played Castlevania 1 for the first time a few days ago. I was surprised at how well it holds up for a NES game. The game is pretty good right up until the last level where it turns into turbo bullshit that is designed only to stop people from finishing the game too fast without caring if its fun. Only beat it with extremely aggressive save stating and I have no idea how much of an autist you would have to be to clear it legit.
>character abilities locked behind random enemy drops
not a flaw, it's a huge bonus. it works well because the game is like 4 hours long and you're not supposed to farm until you have the soul eater ring. the game is best played as a semi-roguelite of sorts where you glide through it only using what drops. the RNG is a lot of fun if you don't go for muh completionist autism at the very start like an idiot. the game won't make that very fun for you and you would have wasted your time.
1's final stretch is not THAT bad if you can react to the birds quickly. III's final stretch on NES is some goddamn bullshit however. The penultimate stage is an asshole.
