This game is BAD. Not mediocre, not underwhelming, it's BAD. Say what you will about XIII and XV, but at least they weren't shitting on a beloved classic. From the awful textures to the reprehensible padding it's an absolute mess of a game, culminating in one of the worst final bosses I've ever seen. This isn't a remake, it's spitting in the face of the original.

I could have forgiven everything else if not for the dumb new “fate” plot line that completely changes Sephiroth and Aerith as characters. Now the plot and the character arcs, the things people most wanted to see in this remake, are no longer sticking to the original. If they wanted to do a sequel or a relaunch of the Compilation then they should have just done it instead of tricking people into thinking they were getting a remake that’s been requested for over a decade and giving them a bad meta sequel. The gameplay is good enough by modern FF standards so I’ve got hope that XVI won’t be complete ass, but fuck literally everything else about VII R.

I mean, it's dumb you fight Sephy at Midgar, but really you fight copy Sephiroth about 1 hour later in Junon and the fight itself is really great.
His ATB skills are like flashy versions of Cloud's skills and all his materia are the same ones he has in the Nibelheim flashback. His final phase he starts using some moves he has in Northern Crater (Shadow Flare), but they kept out enough that it can grow for the real final battle.

Game is a solid 8 out of 10. Some aspects are 10/10, others are like 6/10. I really enjoyed it though, because the 10s were more impactful than the 6s were a drag.
