MMORPG thread

MMORPG were beautiful because you could feel a sense of being part of a community, the eagerness to explore the world and the fun of tailoring your character to suit your tastes.

Auction house, party finder button and soloing end game content among other things killed the sense of being part of a community.
Big sites, streamers and datamining killed the eagerness to explore the world and the fun of tailoring your character to suit your tastes.
Teleports and other convenience travel optiosn removed the downtime that put people in the same spots with nothing to do, and killed the opportunities to socialize.

What was your favorite MMORPG, and do you think there will ever be anything comparable?

>sense of community
>mmo
Yeahhhh nooooo

zoom zoom

>What was your favorite MMORPG
Final Fantasy 11. That's 8 years I'd never trade for the world.
>Anything comparable
FFXIV is ruined by dailies and bullshit like that. I burn out on daily content so fucking bad it kills my drive. Love PSO2 to pieces but dailies kill me. By the time I'm done em', I don't wanna do anything else.

Nothing wrong with Auction houses. Agreed on the rest tho.

>never played runescape in 2006
lmao, poor zoomies missed out on peak MMO.

>What was your favorite MMORPG

Age of Conan: Rise of the Godslayer back when it released, when it still had good pop, most bugs and class issues were fixed and game was hard challenging

Second fav would be 2.x SWTOR (so also after first expansion), but before 3.0

For these periods of time I fuckin loved these games and would play them way more than WoW

this, but I actually feel sorry for them instead of wanting to mock.

Wildstar, despite it's dev team and failures. Solid combat system, and the big drawbacks of an MMO didn't matter because everyone was forced onto the same server anyways in the end.

XIV feels so antithetical to being an MMO outside of weird gameplay areas like Eureka. Rest of the game is meh.
I still play WoW, both classic and retail. I genuinely don't like the classic metagame because it's like the cancer infesting retail but on turbosteroids.

>was playing on a BC server for a few months
>now it's dead and I'm on a Wrath server
eh

Ragnarok Online was my fucking everything for like 6 years straight. I met some great fucking people on that silly little korean grinder, and I miss the vibe it used to have so much. The MMO I wanted to play and lose myself in was FFXI, though, but I was too poor to own a PC good enough or get the HDD bundle.
I've been hopeful every sequel they put out, even the spiritual one, Tree of Savior, would give the same kind of feeling the original did, but nothing has. Honestly, they should've just stuck with their original version of RO2, at least it was somewhat interesting and new. I've given up on all MMOs, the people and how they view MMOs have changed too much for it to go back to how it was. It was fun while it lasted, lads.

favorite MMO was RO. It didn't have auction house and it was great just looking around the bazaars and buying shit
there will never be anything like golden age RO ever again, sadly our world changed

played a bit of RO, RS, EQ (on P99), the one that clicked was original WoW. As mangled and horribly managed as it is these days, I makes the days go by faster and there are a handful of really wholesome moments.

How is black desert online? combat looks nice

XIV is barely an MMO, let alone a RPG.

>no customization
>nobody in the world
>people just spam duty finder
>while in their guild houses
>nobody communicates
>there's no reason to commuicate though
>besides savage raiding there you can clear everything with sub room temperature IQ

it's like a lobby action game at this point, like PSO.

Yeah i bet the next mmo from square enix will be without overworld, there is no reason to waste resources for something people barely use it

no auction houses in pso1 were great. it encouraged trading, playing, and talking to each other. once they added player shops in psu and pso2 those games were social ghost towns.

And it's so easy to create this, just make challenging content that people need to organize themselves and talk to each other to beat.

But muh zoom zooms can't handle that, vide XIV being the zoomercore MMO.

>no customization
subjective
>nobody in the world
stop playing on a dead legacy server
>people just spam duty finder
you can invite people to parties too, nothing stopping you.
>nobody communicates
see second line
>there's no reason to commuicate though
that's an issue for (You) clearly
>besides savage raiding there you can clear everything with sub room temperature IQ
the only objective thing

don't fall for the Korean Jew. Most exploitative shop in existence.

Yeah, it's fucking dumb.
The only ""customization"" there is, is just worthless materia that adds some minor stat boosts, you can't even change weapons, kek.
And yeah, it's such a waste to see the overworld empty, they have fucking beautiful areas but you won't even visit beyond unlocking fast travel to, ironically, completely ignore the fucking map

I agree with that user on auction houses being good because trying to sell the random shit you don't want can be aids, literally just people spamming map chat with offers.

Not him, but get real; XIV's aesthetic customization is only marginally better than WoW's current and worse than the upcoming tripe it's getting (and as far as stats go, is straight up worse in every way than WoW's), the world is pretty dead when there isn't a hunt train going on, DF is 90% of the game anyways, no one talks really unless you consider basic etiquette as communicating.

And that's not getting into the other problems the game has with it's community (for comparison, 90% of the Zig Forums XIV threads are /xivg/ spillovers, they infest literally every other MMO thread to shittalk anyone who doesn't play their game while posting ebin pictures of themselves) and it only gets worse from there. Significantly worse.

I'll admit WoW's world isn't much better as far as liveliness, but it's still more than XIV.

Still playing MapleStory, classic WoW, and OSRS on and off. Downloading PSO2 right now, hoping that it will fill a void. My favorite was probably WoW during TBC, but MapleStory has this certain charm of losing sense of time completely. RuneScape is so unique that nothing else compares to it, so it's kind of hard to put it on any tier. It was particularly more addicting than the other games to me. PSU was pretty sweet, but unfortunately I was more immersed in the ones mentioned above to fully enjoy it.

if you're gonna have no auction house, at least have a method to trade over a distance, like COD mail. I was pissed when I couldn't get rid of my damn Bone Chips in EQ 99 since potential buyers were leveling in bumfuck nowhere.

i liked mortal online but i only played when it was already dying. i just want another sandbox mmo without guns. i'd gladly take a medieval rust clone

>he prefers azerite slot machines over proper planning
>he plays on a dead server
get real you dumb little shit

>no customization
subjective

what?

>gear customization
gems accounts for about 3% of your total stats
besides that it's only EQUIP BEST GEAR, no thought at all
>skill customization
there is none
>passive customization
nope

>rest of your answers
you're a fucking mongoloid lol

If XIV is shit then why are the non roleplaying servers brimming with people doing all sorts of content while other MMOs are merging servers, shutting down, going f2p/p2w, or are basically in maintenance mode for patches

Yeah, I just wish there wasn't any flying and there were some elite quests in the field where you had to find people and organize a team to beat the quest.

Also that gear fucking mattered, as it stands nobody gets happy when something drops, because everything is just a stat stick. No cool effects that would make a low level gear be used in the later levels like FFXI, it sucks so much, completely braindead and boring.

>as it stands nobody gets happy when something drops, because everything is just a stat stick
I can see this both ways.
>On one hand, everything is relatively tame in terms of acquisition! No need to cry foul if you don't get what you need, and if you do - it's..good.
>On the other hand, no rush of cucking some bitch boy out of his Ridill and becoming a server fugitive from Leviathan server on some other bumfuck world I have no ties to. Just some stranger with a Ridill and a new life to live.
Fuck. The good old days.

there's wow (which is shit) and ffxiv (which is also shit) there isn't too much in the market right now and most people already tried wow, so now they're trying the other brand of shit.

they'll all quit when they get to the post ARR quests kek, 999 fetch quests, holy fuck I don't know why I wasted so much of my ephemeral life in that garbage.

I'm playing Orna on my phone.
Despite how disgusting that sounds, picking up shit with GPS is fun.

>no customization
We talking stats? Because you say you want it but you will end up hating it that it might as well not be a thing.

I'd actually forgotten about azerite. I was actually looking at trinkets, talents, specializations, and (god help me) corruptions as far as customization goes. Also the server I got stuck on in XIV is far from dead. Just no one ever has a reason to actually leave a capital city. Ever.

What said. Also, BfA is a bigger dumpster fire than WoD could have ever been. Shadowlands doesn't look much better.

All the MMO I want to play are either dead or shells barely existing and destroyed from their prime
Especially the asian ones

>they'll all quit when they get to the post ARR quests kek
oeople kept saying this since 2013 but it's 2020 now and the active player numbers are still higher than hw and sb launches

I have a nostalgic view on Ragnarok Online. Danger at every corner, espe ially when someone drops a dead branch.

What server if I ask, because I've been to non dead servers through world visit the difference in community and social interaction are night and day.

fuck man I miss chocolate Rift, and vanilla Rift. I just miss Rift. Too bad Trino fucked their games up so badly.

Getting desperate here. Is this game any good now?

Attached: starw.jpg (570x400, 55.85K)

for me it's still EVE because of its approach of having the players drive pretty much every aspect of the game and the "pvp everywhere" aspect, legal scamming, etc. The game has needed some improvements for a long time but it still fills a niche no other game provides and for me it's the only relevant MMO for that reason

it's basically a SOLO game with online optional content. still the only star wars MMO being actively "developed" (ie: maintained)

No customization as in there is no choice whatsoever in how you build your character besides choosing a class. Every dragoon plays exactly the same as every other dragoon besides maybe 3% of your attributes from gems.

And this sucks because then there's no incentives to do content, there is no objective to aim for, it's not like "oooo that epic sword that attacks three times on a 20% chance! I want that!", it's only "lol new sword with +3 str, great" *clicks use best gear*, it's incredibly boring.

And that's only gear customization, there's no skill customization, maybe you could make a single target skill an aoe skill? Maybe make a buff last longer, maybe some kind of choice. NONE. THERE. IS. NO. CHOICE.

So all in all, XIV is an incredibly boring game, it takes a while to see this, you keep playing thinking it will get better, but you click the *pick best gear* on lvl 1 and you'll pick it at max level too and the game doesn't change at all from the beginning to the end.

I love everything about EVE except the gameplay. Might as well read a book at that point.

so vertical progression instead of horizontal progression in a MMO is objectively bad even though the former is what brings high population to a MASSIVE multiplayer online game while the latter is for a niche audience which defeats the massive part of a MMO.

*citation needed

not only vertical progression, but having any kind of choice, there's no difference between this game and any action game, you have no choice in how you build your character in what was supposed to be a RPG, isn't that fucking retarded?

I see why some people don't like it, and it could use improvement, but I actually like EVE's base gameplay. I think it really shines with smaller ships like frigates and destroyers and, to an extent, cruisers where speed/orbit speed, range control, ship maneuverability, etc. are all really important. Actually its main problems are its UI for controlling your ship and the laggy responses to your inputs-- if it weren't for that it would actually be pretty smooth

Big ships are where EVE gets unfun imo, I sorta wish they hadn't introduced so many

Check how many "popular" horizontal progression MMOs are still running today versus vertical.

MMORPGs will never be good again because we have so many different ways of interacting and meeting new people without it. Half of the magic an MMO had was meeting new people AND playing a game with them. Why socialize on an MMO when you can just hop different discord servers, though? It's a dead genre.

>What was your favorite MMORPG
G1-3 Mabinogi
>do you think there will ever be anything comparable?
Hell no, unfortunately that entire formula can never work again.

>>people just spam duty finder
>>while in their guild houses
>>nobody communicates
>>there's no reason to commuicate though
Hardly anyone uses Duty Finder past sprouts getting their MSQ done. Everyone else uses Party Finder and mostly requires some sort of communication from the party. Hell, even unsync'd PF groups end up being pretty chatty.
Everything else you said is correct, but XIV is probably as active of a community as you can get in modern MMOs right now.

>you have no choice in how you build your character
I can be a full on crafting jew without ever touching raids

Zalera.
Because WoW poisoned the pool so hard the only still living horizontal MMO is GW2.

>runescape
>ragnarok online
>tibia
>maple story
>tree of saviour
>ffxi

RO for example ran since 2002 and still has players, or do you expect a game from 18 years ago to have the same playerbase as a more recent game?

Retard.

Any decent MMOs that don't demand you pay $60 for the game, $30 for each expansion, subscription fee of ~$15 a month on top of microtransactions?
