it means he's either putting WAY too much work in to a single commit (basically a way to version a file, doing too much in a single commit kind of invalidates a lot of points of VCS) or he hasn't done much at all

basically what said. he either wrote disgusting amounts of spaghetti code per commit or he didn't really code at all.

A commit, or "revision", is an individual change to a file (or set of files). It's like when you save a file, except with Git, every time you save it creates a unique ID (a.k.a. the "SHA" or "hash") that allows you to keep record of what changes were made when and by who. Commits usually contain a commit message which is a brief description of what changes were made.

This guy is based beyond belief if he hacked Yandev's account just to fix his code and optimize his shitty game.

Commits are how many times he's uploaded to github a new version of the code. You should be doing this quite frequently to keep a good revision history on your game.

As an user above said, even 500 commits over 6 years is way too little. As a solo dev he should be into the 4 digit range now. That means he is either

a) Submitting commits very infrequently, a risky practice and very stupid
b) Had literally only actually updated his code 196 times in 6 years, meaning he's basically not even working on the game and is just coasting on Patreon money for as long as he can fool people into thinking he's really working

For an example (though it's tangential, as it's not a game). VLC has been around for twice the length of his github, 12 years, and has 85,667 commits

All it means is that he works accurately and efficiently. It looks like some of the morons in this thread would be in favor of frequent, unnecessary commits. As a programmer myself I can tell you that this does NOT mean that work isn’t being done on the game. From what I’ve seen it’s progressing smoothly, quite impressive for a solo passion project.
