The series would have been so much better if they took cues from how FFXII offered non-linearity and side content. Instead, they decided that FFXIII should just be FFX with female Cloud this time.
They took away the ability to explore in a Role Playing Game.
The series would have been so much better if they took cues from how FFXII offered non-linearity and side content...
But 90% of the stuff in XII was story gated. You weren't allowed to explore unless it said so.
they should just outright copy xenoblade and how it handles world design
literally just make xenoblade with ff monsters
You could get as far as Nabudis, a lv50 area when you were barely lv20. This was more freedom than any FF before it. Some areas were closed but it was still open and offered a ton of optional areas too.
>still blaming a 10 and 20 year old game for the state of the series.
the people behind the 10 and 20 year old games are still responsible for FF games today. They're the ones who made this bad fanfiction FF7 shit
They keep fucking up to this day and we keep giving them a pass
Xenoblade is still very linear though. It's just an area per area basis. Not really different from FFX except the size of the map itself
I still think FFXII was the best implementation of RTwP is any game ever made. Gambit system should be fucking standard by this point.
I've been playing Xenoblade lately and I agree. This game would have been so much better if I could tell my AI characters what to do in specific situations instead of hoping that the AI connect the dots. It becomes a game of guessing that is tiring me out
FFXII marked the pinnacle of mechanical maturity for the mainline single player franchise, they've done nothing but dumb it down since. If you're going to trace where FF went wrong, mechanically as a franchise, it always comes back to XII because that was the last time they sought to give FF more mechanical depth than previous entries. Every misstep after XII has been in response to players not understanding the nuances of XII. XII went over 65-70% of player's heads so the natural response has been dumb it down until players can get it, but that lead to a slew of shallow games one after another.
XII could have really used two things from the get go:
1) A sprint option (to negate the need for the 2x speed in later releases because of the game's general on-foot time)
2) Normal vs. Expert mode for license board and gambits. Let dullards have a simplified growth track for license board and gambit setups, while Expert gives you full control.
>female Cloud
Lightning is one of the best Final Fantasy girls.
XII is the best title in the franchise.
Worst thing is all the outcry over the gambit system. A system that sought to give freedom of choice to the player in setting up the AI how they wish instead of having retarded ones. This is how we end up with shit like Kingdom Hearts, Xenoblade or FF7 Remake.
They call FFXII a dumbed down Final Fantasy when they praised other FF for taking away freedom of choice for linear battle systems
Has the best moogles too.
Ivalician Moogles were always the cutest and they blend in well with the other races
goddamn I just want a new Tactics game bros...
People mostly bickered that the game played itself, a lot of that mostly due to the auto-attack system. They'd probably have bickered less if the game used a stamina tied to manual attacks for combat in addition to how the rest of the shit works, similar to KH gameplay, just not as mashy.
>goddamn I just want a new Tactics game bros...
the things i would do
the art of this game is fantastic overall
FFXIII was based, the only thing wrong with the series is the "fans"
guys.....
I liked the setting, and the combat was alright after it unlocked enough of it 15 hours later, but jesus fuck that corridor-syndrome and it's love of throwing out similar-sounding lingo everywhere to the point I had to refer to the ingame codex to remind myself wtf meant what (fortunately said codex was very thorough).
Hopefully they're not copying the same battle system
its a shame, the gambit system let you customize your party to be as competent as you wished, this was somehow a bad thing, the system was almost too intuitive, yeah, you could make the game basically play itself, but I found it was much more fun to give them obvious limitations in they could perform, which necessitated my input at almost all times
the system was fantastic, but it was easy to exploit once you got a clue on how it worked and you could essentially set the game on auto pilot if you chose to do so
Even if the result was not the future you envision?
You mean the game where you play as side character?
The Great Gatsby is also narrated through the eyes of a side character.
Most underrated game ever, the music alone makes it legendary.
Vaan is like an 80s action hero, just going along with the events and owning them like a boss.
honestly, XIII's biggest problems are its pacing and how it doesn't unlock the battle system until 15-20 hours in, in most FFs (and most RPGs in general) you have stuff to do inbetween exploring and fighting, XIII practically has nothing to break up the monotony, in XIII, you run down really long hallways and fight, for pretty much the entire game, there is very little to break this up, all you will be doing is running around and fighting, every single sidequest is running around and fighting, no one to talk to, no places to go buy stuff because its all in save points, the monotony comes in hard because you are playing with a neutered combat system for a large part of the game
I had to put the game down a lot before I finished it, replaying it, the levels are fucking long as balls and battles can take a good while and there are loads of them, with absolutely nothing in between all this, it gets tiring
decent game, but from what I hear, they had to cut a load of extra stuff out and it shows
>Xenoblade
so live FF12?
what is up with tactics games and giving their protags outfits that heavily accentuate their butt
not that i'm complaining or anything
There are many problems with FFXII but experiencing the story through the eyes of Vaan is not one of them
what is it about this shirt that improves the design so much?
