That's a pretty slick red herring, but people aren't complaining about the character's dying, they're talking about the retarded writing, and how Ellie killed a thousand people to get to Abby at the end, including killing a pregnant woman, but then all of a sudden just stops short of drowning her because "IF I DID THAT I WOULD JUST BE CONTINUING THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE" - completely disregarding everyone she's killed to get to that point which isn't just a gaping plot hole, but also absolutely batshit stupid.

On top of the fact that the game is way too fucking easy, boring to play through, and padded with lots of mumble-core beatnic hipster dialogue.

The games writing is full of so many fucking flaws. The real issue though is that Neil is never going to address any of them and simply pretend that people are upset over Joel being killed and nothing else.
This is a pretty big problem with media today. You make a shitty product, and when people call it shit you simply deflect, and enough fanboys or journalists online will defend you until it blows over. This is the route people like Neil take because they have massive egos and refuse to admit that they may have been wrong and their writing is mediocre at best
