I like 1 the most because it felt like an action adventure game rather than specifically a "character action" game as you would call it. Creating a new genre was simply a byproduct of the first game being so good

DMC thread? DMC thread.
Just picked up the HD trilogy on Steam, looking forward to trying 1 again. Played through it with gameshark as a kid, looking forward to getting my duly deserved ass kicking now.
Is he doing the Indian Joker face?
I bought the HD collection+4SE yesterday. I look forward to playing them some day before 5 gets yanked from gamepass.
1 is borderline unplayable in 2020
I like 3 more than 1 but that is respectable reasoning.
Fair enough
What the hell does "character action game" even mean?
1 had the best aesthetics by far
It's a pretty poor adventure game even by Capcom standards though.
I've never stood this fascination with DMC1's vestigal RE elements, namely because when judged as a RE game it's pretty bad. It's the combat that makes DMC1 good.
Its like a fighting game with combos. But theres no player vs player. But 3D fighting games lock you onto the other player and your mobility is limited.
Character action games are literally beat em ups in 3D.
The definition of character action game is not clear at all.
How would Zelda or Mario 64 not be a character action game?
Game with fast combat and shit everything else.
It means the game is Action but also about a specific kind of action related to that character's personality/mentality.
Honestly I disagree but I love 1 3 and 5 and 1 is the most impressive for its time
is playable, just kinda boring compared to 3
Is "hack and slash" different from character action?
What genre would Dynasty Warriors be in. What genre would God of War, Dante's Inferno, Castlevania Lords of Shadow be in?
All of these games are not as good as Devil May Cry and are just mindless button mashers with huge circular attacks, protecting your character from all directions.
>1
Kamiyadrone begone.
have you played the new switch edition of dmc3?
with the ability to switch between all weapons and stances, i think it finally beats dmc1
Dynasty Warriors and friends are definitely hack and slash games.
I would argue that old God of War games are character action games, just shallow ones
Sounds stupidly vague. OP should have just called DMC action hack and slash games. should be good enough of an umbrella term regardlss of combos/complexity. Not all FPS games are equally complex but they are still called FPS games
I'd put Mario more into plaformer category since fighting enemies isn't the focus.
I like 4, DmC:DmC, and 5 for the outside levels.
In DMC1 and DMC3 you are inside all the time.
I like the linear levels in DmC:DmC and 5.
I dont like looking at maps or having to find out where to go.
Its action games that have such a good gameplay, that you need to arbitrarily classify them as a completely different genre otherwise other action game would look bad
Just call it hack and slash. That's what it is, being deeper than the usual stuff doesn't warrant it's own genre.
Hack and slash was what these games were called back then
Hack and slash is a kind of Action genre where the gameplay is derived from fighting with numerous enemies using only swords or other pointed weapons. A hack-and-slash game is one like Onimusha, or Shinobi. The point of the game is to hack, or slash, as many enemies as possible using the pointed techniques of the game. Ten point slash, ninjutsu and so on.
A Character Action game is a kind of game that is Action, but the point is not to hack or slash the enemies. While the genre is Action, there may not always be enemies to fight. Devil May Cry is a Character Action game where enemies are always present, but in other games where saving civilians or stopping something tragic from happening, like Vanquish, a more traditional title like Character Action may be appropriate.
I would call Lords of Shadow an Action Adventure game, while God of War is a Character Action game, because it focuses intently on Kratos and his specific perspective of how combat looks. It is told from his perspective, and his alone.
>Character action games are literally beat em ups in 3D.
This, with the addition of swords and/or guns
beat em ups can have swords and guns. Just look at TMNT.
3>5>1=DmC>4>2
Wow, waht a retarded post.
So now, if in shinobi you use a nunchuck instead of a sword, while the entirety of the game stays the same, it's no longer a hack and slash?
This, the term character action was coined when we started to get more action games that didn't necessarily involve swords or other types of bladed weapons, or at least those kinds of weapons weren't the focus of the game, like Bayonetta, Vanquish, God Hand, etc.
3 > 5 > 1 > 4 > 2
But you don't. In Shinobi you only use the Hotsuma.
Yes correct. Thank you.
Theres usually no NPCs on the map to talk to in these kinds of games.
The levels are either linear, or metroidvania. Theres usually a mission select screen. Its never open world. I would like an open world DMC game.
People who say this are as retarded as the ones who call 1 the best one. It's still a great game but a bit simplistic and tries some experimental shit, most of which are failures.
>3=5
Nice try. 5 is just a linear arcade game with none of the nuance that made the originals great.
Puzzles are gone, good level design is gone, atmospheric music is gone. 5 is not a compelte package, it's member berries where no one's power is earned, everything is frontloaded with Dante, the campaign is split 3 ways and Nero's fun is locked behind NG+.
Literally every DMC game, 1-4 and even DmC are better than 5. The boomer memes couldn't be more real because 5 is a button mashing snoozefest that requires no brain function whatsoever.
That would be kind of good, a return to the original DMC formula sounds good.
DMC1 was pretty open world.
dmc>3>5>rest
i dont care if you're upset about it, nerds
They are 3d beat em ups and action platformers you goon. Quit being autistic. This shit has been around since the NES.
But you don't platform in Vanquish... you use rocket-knees.
1 and 3 are metroidvania? Theres a mission select screen, but its open world because you can go anywhere that isn't even relevant to the mission. It would technically be open world but its hallways and inside areas.
1 allows you to backtrack anywhere even if you've already completed the mission. It's possible to return completely to the start of the game from mission 20 just by running back.
5 > power gap > 3 > 4 > 1 > 2
All good games tho
5's biggest flaw holding it back from being the best is that it's slower and easier than the rest
Fix both of these things and it would be at the top of every list
Being slower is good because it has 4x as many effects on the screen from attacks at once than the others.
If it was both fast and cluttered it would be impossible to play.
>4 the lowest
>when it literally has the best Dante gameplay in the series
Why?
