There will be a grind, but I don't think they'll go that route; people lootboxes have gotten a bad reputation. Especially for a launch day system seller I think they'd want to avoid controversy.
Plus they keep billing this game as a spiritual reboot and that they're taking a lot of inspiration from Halo CE.

Halo was played for the gameplay, spending time with friends, etc primarily. Being able to represent your spartan's cosmetic personality in order to have your unique style of "coolness" was a great addition to H3 and Reach, helps identify yourself between friends during stuff like custom games.
No, they reward season points. Ranking up requires XP and up to level 100 you get 1 season point as well per level.
