Tolkien is given too much credit when it comes to fantasy.

Yes, he was incredibly influential, and yes he did create a lot of the fantasy tropes we see today; but he didn't CREATE fantasy. Most of LOTR is built off mythology and folklore, concepts such as elves, goblins, wizards etc is nothing new. His greatest accomplishment wasn't creating fantasy as much as it was taking fantasy and unifying it all under one umbrella. He took old wives tales and made them into actual written down lore and actual stories, he made something ethereal more concrete. THAT is his greatest accomplishment.

I've read like easily 200 forgotten realms books, and all of tolkien, obviously it borrows and homages to it, but its way better considering its being still written about and not owned by 1 guy who had the audacity to die
