Who gives a shit about how many surface level paper mario elements they reveal in screenshots? The battle system and boss battles look like a dumpster fire, no amount of cute flavor text is gonna salvage the game if it's still as awkward to play as the previous two.

Gameplay looks awful and companions are superficial. They don't even stay with you and they don't have abilities you can use at will, so what's the point?

I remember the original games having a large hub world with fast travel pipes that brought you to distinct areas that you’d explore and fight a boss at the end at. It seems like The Origami King based on the footage, that is, if you’re not a blind man, has a large hub world that you explore and travel to distinct areas to clear out and fight a boss at the end at, and have the option to fast travel to later. They replaced them with degradable ones. There has not been a single game (apart from MMOs using the system as a gold sink for the economy) where durability and degradation made the game better. Ever. It's a nonlinear game which means you will either never be able to meaningfully advance Mario since the game would be too easy otherwise, or they will actually try to make the consumable items "scale" and fuck the difficulty curve of the game like it did in BoTW.

Change is fine but the changes still have to be GOOD. When the changes are for the worse like in this case, people have the right to complain about it. This isn't some "OLD GOOD NEW BAD" thing like you autists like to throw around, but rather "the older system was arguably more fun". Plus with the Mario & Luigi series dead, it would be fine for Paper Mario to return to its "traditional Mario RPG" status since one of the reasons it got experimental in the first place was Nintendo not wanting two similar but different Mario RPG series.

Experimental is the wrong word for what happened to Paper Mario. The first three games were far more experimental than the ones that came later.

It just shows the similarities between games. There is new being shown in this game but personally speaking I also see a lot and I mean a lot of similarities to the previous 2 entries in ideas, assets, animations and that last image especially bugs me. It makes me continuously worried.

i mean you joke about it but same thing happened in TTYD , partner abilities where only used like twice during the level they were acquired

I'm not saying there isn't, but I keep seeing people act like this game is completely new or fixing issues but as someone who's played Sticker Star and Color Splash to completion and even started replaying both games all I see are similarities that are too strikingly similar. It feels like nothing has been truly learned, at most bandaids were made, Color Splash was the same, it added bandaids over Sticker Star's flaws and this game feels the same. The reuse of assets also just feels lazy as hell. I'm usually ok with to an extent, but it's stacking up, especially with shit like the paint meter just being confetti or an over saturation of coins which literally destroyed any battle in CS as 's webm is showing off. Maybe they'll do the economy correct this time, but I have low hopes. They fucked up 2 games in a row for me but so many people keep acting like I should just try it out for a third damn time when all I see is returning elements I disliked or will potentially dislike. It's just so worrying.
