Why did old Zig Forums not care about expansion packs but new Zig Forums is constantly up in arms about DLC?
Old nigga here. Expansion packs were at times almost a completely new game for half the price.
DLC is like - SWORD recolor with particle effects and bonus to burning - $10
As far as I remember the BF2 expansion packs didn't add that much, they were more like the "map packs" that got sold for games like Halo and CoD.
Still better than microtransactions, though. You ended up getting locked out of playing on some servers, but at least it wasn't constantly forced down your throat.
only got special forces because it added quite a lot of new stuff
1942 expansions were basically new games
expansion packs were few and far between for good games
Because expansion packs are additions to already finished standalone games. DLC is a moneygrab attempt at giving you something that was planned in a game, but held off for DLC so you are compelled to buy it. There's a reason you buy several popular games with a DLC bundle, like Skyrim and the entire Dark Souls series. The marketers and developers realized that this gave them more money, so they do it.
Expansion packs were generally large additions of entirely new content and typically came out at least six months after the game.
Most DLC is just a small amount of low effort content that was obviously removed from the original game to sell separately not long after the original release. And the worst thing about it is that they try to sell it to you before you even know what the fuck it actually is in "season passes".
There is still some DLC which are basically expansion packs, they're fine.
>PvP arenas locked behind DLC in DS3
Don't make me mad again.
Special Forces was an actual expansion pack. It had a bunch of new stuff beyond just maps. The grappling hooks and ziplines were tons of fun.
The other two were pure map packs and I never bought them as a result.
>completely new games
>4 new maps
>about 5 new weapons
Old good
New bad
/thread
Expansion Packs are basically just DLC with more content.
The best DLC is expansion pack quality but most DLC has a much lower budget.
You could get the bf2 chest and other shit like pic related back in the day for like 15 dollars, there is no modern equivalent to these.
Is LoD the greatest expansion pack of all time?
Until they added microtransactions to Skyrim via the creation club, Skyrim's DLC wasnt that bad and might as well be an expansion pack.
Except for the build your own house thing that was shit and could have just been cut content they polished up and re-added. Shame they didnt add the windhelm arena in as DLC.
DLC is fine if it has the expansion pack philosophy - a bundle of meaningful new content (no skins dont count) for a reasonable price.
Is D2: LoD the greatest expansion pack of all time?
bf2 expansions were fucking garbage and anyone that actually played them knows this.
Brood war
Expansion packs have always been a bad experience for multiplayer games user. NOBODY with a brain thinks they were good.
Special Forces was great. The others weren't.
Armored Force is the best one because the new maps in the USA were really cool and you could drive trucks and even the new airplane.
Devs and publishers didnt yet realize you could rip off consoomers so egregiously so expansion packs were basically brand new games at a cheap price. An extraordinary value really that the makers made it worth your while. Now it's the exact opposite. Overpriced shit for stuff already in the game or on the disk that was intentionally held back.
It didn't even add a new race. If anything, Frozen Throne.
because expansion packs were significant in the amount of content added to the game, now you get the same price for a single item in game
>BF2: Special Forces
8 new maps
6 new "factions"
9 new vehicles
3 new weapons
7 new gadgets
Some new mechanics centered around said gadgets.
You could buy and play it completely separately from BF2 yet your rank was carried over to the base game and all points / experience towards the next rank and unlock was doubled while playing Special Forces. To top it off? It was only like $15. THAT is how you do an expansion pack as opposed to shitty overpriced DLC.
I cant believe anyone actually enjoyed the gameplay in this trash series
I never had problems with them when they're actually big. I mean they're called addons instead of DLC. Witcher and DS/BB are very good examples of great DLC
What do you mean?
and it fractured the playerbase
and it died first
and it should have been a free patch
