PC or emulation if I want to play the original Catherine? I heard the PC port had some framerate issues that were never resolved and that they "fixed" the deadnaming in the credits.
PC or emulation if I want to play the original Catherine...
PC (Classic).
Full Body / Qatherine renders the original release obsolete though.
I've heard mixed things about the new content in Full Body is why.
The new content is basically more routes and endings.
Yes, but the important question is whether or not that new content is thematically (and aesthetically) consistent with the original game's intent. To which I've heard many negative things.
Technically speaking you could say the Q route is more of a joke ending.
I don't know why people care so much about credits but I made a list for people who do:
Catherine Classic is the only version of the game with credits that just say "Erica Anderson"
Catherine JP: "Eric Anderson (EricA)"
Catherine Western Version: "Erica Anderson (Eric)"
Catherine JP Full Body: "EricA (Eric Anderson)"
I'm not a fan of the Rin route myself but I would still say Full Body is an improvement over the original, story and gameplay wise.
Based on one important element people overlook: the chaos-law dichotomy you are presented with throughout the game is ultimately false. The villains try to cull out men and fit them into easy to define categories when the whole point is that there are shades of grey and people aren't literally purely chaotic/lawful. This is the whole point of Vincent's speech to Boss at the end and extends to the love interests as well.
Oh and the western version of FB also simply lists the character as "Erica Anderson"
PC/emulation = Soul
Full Body = soulless
You could play the PS3 original without much of issues on the RPCS3, but the PC port is very serviceable.
>Full Body / Qatherine renders the original release obsolete though.
No, the FB version is ALL AROUND INFERIOR to the original.
I can write you a wall of rant about if if you want. No one should start with FB.
is it a good game though? I am not a fan of weeb visual novel dialogue
this game looks good, but the part about climbing and moving boxes looks dull and boring. Is it worth the effort?
Please write that wall so I will know if I should avoid FB.
It's a GREAT game, and nothing like a VN.
The FB version just should not be the version you play at first. Or, to be blunt, at all if you ask me.
I don't understand what you youngsters look at, but one thing is for sure: Catherine is not dull nor boring.
The game is like a merge of survival horror and puzzling. It's hectic as fuck at best, and super intriguing.
Okay, so I recently spent a couple weeks playing the Catherine: Full Body + re-playing the Classic again.
I can now honestly say that the FB is a major DOWNGRADE compared to OG, in every possible way.
It only sounds good on the paper to say that it has more content, but it all clashes VERY hard with the original's story and atmosphere.
(SPOILERS) AHOI!
>Atmosphere
Classic feels like a borderline horror story or a thriller.
From the very intro screens with sheep falling to their bloody deaths, to the much darker toned world design, the game puts some clear pressure and feeling of threat on the MC and players.
FB however, significantly reduces this sort of imagery, opting for more brighter, more PINK visual design.
It feels more like an ecchi dating-sim parody of the original game. More "anime", if that makes sense.
>Story & themes
OG is clearly structured and actually progresses in a believable manner. There is an obvious "battle of sexes" theme going on. Vincent's struggles are made more apparent, and his silly hijinks make more sense when you realize how little of actual break he ever gets.
The story also doesn't go into full-blown "good vs evil" trope.
FB seems quite similar on the surface, until they introduce Rin. Right at the beginning.
She's pretty much just stapled on top of the old show, which means the scenes feel out of place.
Meanwhile, her in-game placements greatly waters down the Vincent's journey & the OG themes, even spoils the plot.
For some reason, Vincent, the exhausted loser that's about to lose his mind finds some time to take care of this pink-haired weirdo, and show the most worry towards her, nonstop.
Not only that, but her appearance in the Nightmares' "Landings" also drops the feeling of doom and gloom that section of the game originally had, giving some automatic feeling of hope and relief to everyone involved.
Last, she completely steals the spotlight from Erica. You know why.
Gonna continue.... >
I'm pretty sure you're the guy who already has a saved image of a wall rant which basically boils down to you criticising minor changes such as a title screen, a broader difficulty range (which is actually a good thing) and a change in soundtrack for 'completely ruining' the game. While you ignore objectively better changes such as fixing babel, giving more content for both single player and multiplayer with remix, rapunzel and offering players the choice for jp or english dialogue.
>Gameplay
Classic is pretty much like an arcade game.
You need to collect "lives" in order to continue / re-try the mission if you die. And die you will.
The brutal Game Over screen and properly limited Undos only highlight the pseudo "survival horror" style of the game, making the real-life sections at the bar feel even more chill and welcoming.
The gold prices actually demand perfect play with no re-dos, so they feel earned.
FB tones down EVERYTHING.
You got automatic Undos if you "die", and you got unlimited retries. Thus the extra lives have been reworked into extra Undos, which stack up.
Many missions are made easier, with re-designed layouts and new tricks such as being able to push down enemies down while hanging from the edge. Items are more OP as well, like how a White Block actually makes a 3x3 sized platform for you now, instead of just one block.
It is piss easy to get Golden prices now, even if you spam UNDO. Game-Overs are only possible if you die while out of Undos... meaning never ever.
Finally, on Easy and "Safety" (Very Easy mode), there's also a literal AUTO PLAY MODE.
Yes, a legit Game-Journalist difficulty setting for people too lazy to play the game. Sure, it's kinda handy to have if you've played the game a few times and just wanna see the alternative endings on a single sit-through... but why not just Youtube them then ?
The one addition I DO quite like in FB's gameplay is the silhouette that shows Vincent's position if he's hidden behind a block, plus the highlighted Edges he can then spider on-to. It was not gamebreaking in the OG, but you kinda had to juggle with camera more to see what's going on behind blocks.
...one more TBC, because fuck character limits... >
>Some other things
This kinda falls between Story & Gameplay sections, but having just replayed Classic a few times, I noticed that the IRL sections Text-Messages system is very different. You barely get any messages from your Friends in FB, where as you got a number of them in the Classic, building their character.
Classic also has a WAY BETTER soundtrack.
FB's is mostly based on the original's tunes, but the atmosphere is again totally different.
And you will get sick of hearing that same few-second long piano tune, over and over again.
I also was hyped for the Jap audio... but boy is the Eng dub superior in this games' case!
...and Finally:
>Sexual minority representation
This one's a big of a hornest's nest, so I'll be brief.
To put it in my friend's terms, Erica did the sexual-minority trope RIGHT, and the fact that things about her are not blatantly thrown into your face nonstop made it not only easier to digest, but also demonstrates how OK the characters were with the thing. Plus, it made replays more fun, as you can then spot the "subtle" hints.
Rin LITERALLY overrides Erica in many ways. She's doing waitress jobs, everyone adores her, Erica is giving her clothes, and her gender reveal is forced, obligatory scene that throws everyone into a very bizarre, outright childish shock, that is followed by "...hey, maybe this is OK afterall? Let's not b old-fashioned! ;)" apologizing. Oh, and Erica gets less screen time.
Not to mention her route throws the OG's Freedom / Order / My way setting literally under a bus.
They try to sugarcoat it as some sort of brave 3rd option ... but that makes it the 4th option in reality. One that steals bits and pieces from other choices.
And Jesus fuck is her ending(s) idiotic and cringe! At least in the OG, you could also argue that you got some "normal life" vs "exciting supernatural" fight going on as well as a bonus spice, but this pinky twig's backstory and finale go into Kung Pow -tier ridiculousness.
/end
Thank you.
Dunno if he mentioned it but the visuals are worse too.
Yes, I'm the same guy, and I will never cease challenging your naive and superficial assumption that the changes would be "minor", or ever good.
"Wider" difficulty selection means jack shit when every single one of them is automatically easier than the original game on EZ moodo. The atmospheric and thought-provoking SP campaign is the cream and butter of the Catherine experience, so MP elements mean jack shit to me, and I dare to say to most other fans as well.
And since atmosphere and themes are such crucial part of the game's selling point, diluting it with literal weeb shit and "less spooky" themes and style instantly butchers a major part of the experience.
I already stated my opinion about the Jap dub.
I ALWAYS go for the original Japanese audio if available, but Jesus christ that shit just outright RUINS Catherine.
Not only does it not make sense to have Americans speak Jap, but the animu tropes are cranked to 11 in VA, lacking the slight mature grit English dub has.
pc port was completely fine in my case.
Rin Qatherine is a trapi saved you 60 and time, your welcome
>Yes, I'm the same guy, and I will never cease challenging your naive and superficial assumption that the changes would be "minor", or ever good.
Always nice to see you keep an open mind, that's how you know you can have a good argument.

Again, it's not all about you, it's about appealing to a wider audience. Hard remix and Babel modes are still very challenging. The horror atmosphere is still present in the nightmares themselves, I imagine they just have a lesser effect given you have played the game probably many times already so you'e now just focused on the difficulty. You're aware that there's a competitive catherine community, it's not the main audience for the game admittedly but it's still substantial so to overlook them is a bit of a disservice.
>I already stated my opinion about the Jap dub.

That's fine to have your opinion but the fact that the game gives the option for a Japanese Audio for people who prefer it is a positive.
>it's about appealing to a wider audience.
The doom of just about every game ever created.
Seems like nobody appreciates craftmanship and mastery of the art any more.
Nobody but AZN ART-fags care about Babel. At least you admit it yourself.
>The horror atmosphere is still present in the nightmares themselves
Not only are they watered down by the visual overhaul + the fact that the Ayylmao trap is there cheering you up and aiding you if shit gets too hard, but the horror-ish thriller stuff is meant to also apply to the real world.
The extremely more light hearted IRL sections of Full Body literally distract players from the mood and themes of the games, practically eliminating the detective-story mind games one would typically have while playing the Classic.
in short, FB makes the two compartments of the game feel like separated games, not part of the whole.
>That's fine to have your opinion but the fact that the game gives the option for a Japanese Audio for people who prefer it is a positive.
I WOULD prefer it, but it does NOT fit the game, and generally is not a thing one should use as an argument when choosing between the OG and FB.
>The doom of just about every game ever created.
>Seems like nobody appreciates craftmanship and mastery of the art any more.
>Nobody but AZN ART-fags care about Babel. At least you admit it yourself.
Are you actually trying to have a constructive debate or just trying to sound as pretentious as possible?
To write off my valid point about Babel and Remix mode hard by just calling an AZN ART-fag kind of just proves my earlier point that this is not an objectively inferior game to the og, it's just because specific aspects of the game you cared about changed in a way you didn't like so that must mean it is objectively horrible and no one should touch it.
>Not only are they watered down by the visual overhaul + the fact that the Ayylmao trap is there cheering you up and aiding you if shit gets too hard
I've said this before: Rin is supposed to represent a place of calm and hope for Vincent.
>The extremely more light hearted IRL sections of Full Body literally distract players from the mood and themes of the games, practically eliminating the detective-story mind games one would typically have while playing the Classic.
The daytime scenes with K and C are literally all still there and just as tense. The mystery elements with Catherine, the nightmares, the mysterious voice, who sent Vincent to the nightmares, all of that is still present.
>I WOULD prefer it, but it does NOT fit the game, and generally is not a thing one should use as an argument when choosing between the OG and FB.
It is funny that you are criticising my style of argument when I am bringing up legitimate points and new content that the remake has over the original but apparently that is not a valid argument for determining whether to go with the remake or the original. That makes no fucking sense.
You cannot construct a decent argument, you're acting as if Catherine and Catherine FB was only made with you in mind when it's not.
PC version kept crashing for me. Seems like a cool game but it was impossible to progress.
>wants to avoid framerate issues
>ps3 emulation
you are stupid
I'm playing Full Body right now and it's ridiculous how obsolete it makes the original.
In the original Katherine comes off as a total controlling bitch and the only thing she has going for it is being the "long term girlfriend" but besides that you don't know anything at all.
She comes out as frigid and controlling, so it makes C the obvious choice.
In Full Body the relationship as actually fleshed out more and the choice isn't as clear cut as it was in the original.
Overall a much better experience coming from someone who played both.
I played both, many times, and I consider Full body an all around inferior release.
While I still prefer Catherine, I do enjoy they added more backstory for K and Vincent's relationship in Full Body. It helped contextualise both of the characters' situations in the present.
The extra scenes with Catherine at the bar are also fun.
