Those are the most beloved ones in the series in the eyes or critics and fans.

He is correct, those aren't partners. They are tag alongs. They are AI controlled and only follow you for specific segments. Partners would actually not only stick around and increase your overworld moveset, but they would actually open your battle options. Those are just there because Tanabe got angry at people sending him death threads and wanted them to shut up.

Why would you want one? Thousand Year Door is great because it takes Paper Mario in a unique direction. There's no replicating that. What future games should go for is the core stuff that makes the Paper Mario games great (namely the first two) and build a new game that does its own thing using that core as a base.

Its enjoyable if you have no attachment whatsoever although you will get more mileage from playing PM64 first, both are fantastic even if you give zero shits about the greater Mario ~lore~

64 and TTYD are worth your time.
The rest are nothing like those games so if you end up liking them, skip the rest.

I don't see why you wouldn't enjoy them. Give 'em a shot like any other JRPG. They're interesting because of their unique take on the genre. That said, I'd also recommend Mario RPG and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, if you haven't already tried those.

TTYD sucked compared to the Mario & Luigi games. The real issue is that AlphaDream went bankrupt so the Mario & Luigi series is indefinitely cancelled.
