Student loans can't be discharged, making them risk free. Colleges can charge out the ass knowing that banks will happily give out such loans. Many jobs require degrees just to apply, forcing students to attend these overpriced colleges. Essentially, it's because of the combined retardation and greed of the government, banks, colleges, and employers.

euro land is not UK land. A year of university, at my uni at least, costs about £9,250 a semester, and then your maintenance loan is separate and that's what you have to live on. Maintenance loans can be anywhere from like £3000 to £9000 for a year depending on your parents income and you'll get that in three payments across the whole year.
