What happened to this franchise?

I'd argue GameFreak stopped trying once Gen4 came out. It was already showing little effort then.

Pokemon is a cult and Pokemon fans are devout followers, Gamefreak realized somewhere during the 3DS era that they're too far ingrained in their consumer's minds to ever truly be at enough fault to hurt their bottom line, hence, they get lazier and lazier with each passing title.

It became a true franchise, rather than just a game series. There's no such thing as a Pokémon game getting delayed, because if it were to happen then it would effect the TCG, the cartoons, the movies, the merchandise etc. Every game must release on schedule, and since ownership of the IP is a shitshow Nintendo can't just employ multiple dev teams like Activision does with CoD. Game Freak is in control of mainline game development, and they failed to create a game engine that is fit to run proper console titles.

The focus on a "deeper" story starting in gen5 , and the transition into 3D.
The first one while shit they could have gotten away with if they stayed 2D, but the need to do unskippable cutscenes, which take longer because it's 3D, made everything that much longer. Add that to shorter dev even after going 3D and you end up with current pokemon

used to be that merchandise was made to promote the games. now, the games are made just to create more merchandise from it. it's an ugly cycle of derivative bullshit

TPC also takes far too much liberty with the proerty. they took the mobile game pill and went crazier with it than any other IP

They realized putting effort to their games was no longer necessary, their retarded fanbase will eat up anything.

Game Freak realized that the games would sell 10 million+ copies no matter what, so they didn't need to put in effort anymore.

As someone who grew up with this franchise in its infancy, this was depressing to watch man. Fuck

This is more or less accurate. Original Red/Blue felt like an entire world of adventure, and was endearing because everything felt incredible and new and every single pokemon was interesting and cool and you wanted to scour every inch of it. Those early iterations on GB and GBA, and really even into the DS era were limited by hardware and game design know how. But the issue is that as we transitioned into modern consoles and powerful handhelds Game Freak progressed with the wrong aspect; They made a point of surfacing the underpinning stats and mechanics that appeased the obsessive types, but at the same time they made shit more linear and more "story driven" in spite of having pointless plots and 1-dimensional characters.

Pokemon needs to be about the adventure. It needs to emphasize how cool it is to catch even a single pokemon, and having a team that feels like it's yours. A very small subset want to worry about EVs and IVs and grinding out eggs to get a perfect stat shiny whatever the fuck. It's a rote thing to say but we need a pokemon Breath of the Wild. Wide open, exploration focused, and about the motherfucking adventure.

Masuda literally admired that he didn't try very hard with gen 4. In his personal blog he said they believed adding wi fi was enough of a revolution that they didn't have to try too hard in anything else.

That generation was when people massively complained that Pokémon had become repetitive wo he tried to change that in gen 5. But some people hated gen 5 and Masuda realized people only cared about nostalgia.

The games have been nostalgia pandering since then.
So yeah, gen 4 was the first time they stopped trying, but the franchise died a little later.

They know they can get away with anything when the fans have absolutely no standars and are mostly children or autistic manchildren.

But I stopped caring and stick with gen 4-5 games and romhacks whenever I have an itch for Pokémon. Showdown is also nice.
