You're in for a bad Final Fantasy game, but a truly special and great game.
I disagree that the characters are bad. All the characters start out extremely unlikable, but they will grow throughout the story into one of the better Final Fantasy casts.

I find the first 10 chapters really good. When you get to the Archylte Steppe chapter, there's a spike of increased difficulty. Kinda stopped playing there.

Not arpg, it's a pretty unique take on the ATB system. It focuses heavily on changing and forming different combinations of classes mid battle, which have different abilities. You change these combinations on the fly in real time to respond to attacks and strike the enemy's weakness. It's pretty challenging esp if you don't grind.

Linear to the point of absurdity, great graphics,ost, only 2 likeable characters (Sazh and Snow) good story concept but gets convoluted and inconprehensible in the last third but with a satisfying ending.
Decent combat system, not a lot to do in post game outside of hunting monsters in the big open area near the end.

it's an okay game. it's linear and the characters are terrible which is the opposite of what you want in a final fantasy game, but on the other hand the gameplay is slightly more engaging than just mashing x constantly. and chapter 10 can be pretty comfy if you like hunts, otherwise it'll probably be boring

Did you play X? It's not even as linear as that but very close. Same game basically but different combat and setting.
Don't listen to people that say it's "mash x to win", there is a lot of strategy. To get the most out of the game, always strive to get 5 stars in every battle. Endgame is really fun where everything opens up including jobs.
