How come Gamefreak cannot design consistently great final starters after Gen 4? Like there’s always one or two starters that just gets the short end of the stick, and in Gen 8 they all suck except Rillaboom maybe.

Pick Treecko if you want a worthless party member until it learns Leaf Blade, very TM reliant
Pick Torchic if you want an easier experience
Pick Mudkip if you just want to stomp the game

I think I went with Treeko on my very first playthrough but I honestly like all three. If I absolutely had to choose a favorite I think I'd have to go with Torchic, Fire/Fighting was still new and cool at the time.

They just want to repeat the Charizard "success" and nothing else so they take a shortcut by making only one "cool" starter.

You say that but they shilled Incineroar hard in Gen 7 even when Decidueye was the more popular one before smash. Now with Gen 8 I don't even know who the "Charizard" is supposed to be because they all suck.

I always went torchic and now it feels weird to have anything other than it on my team in gen 3.

Torchic. It can solo the whole game even unevolved. There's no reason to use mudkip in a region with that many water types and treeko is just laughably shit.
