Dedede, the self appointed ruler had already stolen all of the food in dreamland once before. There was so an incident with nightmare, a giant bird. Meta Knight was looking to instill some order in the world.

Yes, he basically figured "If I succeed, then this should happen" so he went through with it. Unfortunately for his plans Kirby intervened, but considering Metaknight doesn't seem to harbor ill-will to Kirby in later installments, it's likely he doesn't care and accepted his defeat.
