Try unreal engine

>try unreal engine
>comes packed with Epic Fail Games Store's horrible frontend
>incredibly un-intuitive design
>"you can make your own games so long as you don't want to change player speed or anything else for that matter teehee!"
>Use our gay reddit blueprints™, nobody reads C*de nowdays!

>try Unity
>everything is immediately intuitive
>tutorials on youtube, can theoretically get things up and running in minutes
>code isn't immediately bundled with thousands of lines of filler, and is effectively a blank slate for the designer instead
>isn't made by gay virtue signalling faggots
>graphics are unironically far shittier, but have some charm to them

Tell me why Unreal engine isn't immediately shit anons? Why are epic games trying so desperately hard to make me hate them so much?

Is it a smart idea to use Unity for 2D games?

I guess you're just bad lol. Git gud.

>the engine is only good if its braindead easy to develop games for idiots like me

steamie cope

I've heard Godot is better, but IMO both are far more catered to working in 3d. Not to say it's impossible, but you've got your work cut out for you if you do.

B-but Unity bad! Bad logo at game start! Get Godot instead.

Godot is only better in license desu, but it's rapidly improving

just a year ago it was a joke and now it's one of the more popular engines for game jams

>t.unplugged from reality
>t.hasn't used unrealengine

Oh my god everyone is so pissed in this thread lmaooo

>godot
>2d Exclusive
Maybe. I unironically wanted to try gamemaker for that but it seems to be getting somehow worse.
So I've heard. Seems promising indeed

But it's only just begun..

>>"you can make your own games so long as you don't want to change player speed or anything else for that matter teehee!"
never used unreal but isn't the entire engine's code available, unlike unity? what's stopping you from changing anything?

Unreal seems to be the engine used by more professional studios, Unity for notable indie titles. Godot has a better policy but has no games, vid related

To be perfectly honest with you, if you had a lot of knowledge of C++ and reaaaally wanted to go in deep, you probably could. That being said, my knowledge of coding comes from javascript, and I've no intention of even attempting that, it sounds incredibly time consuming and not really worth the outcome unless I had a boner for Unreal Engine, which I definitely do not. There have been some good games made with unreal engine, undeniably so, but as a solo beginner dev I don't see the appeal at all over unity, especially since everything is just so un-intuitive, awful, and gay.

Unity is pretty good if you ignore their asset store shit and make your own stuff, but so is undreal if you throw all the trash out.

>my knowledge of coding comes from javascript
that explains a lot actually
you're fucking retarded and know nothing about programming so of course you prefer unity, the engine made for retards who don't know anything about programming

Yea Unity is pretty infamous for asset flipping devs to be fair. I'm gonna try to use my own assets where possible, even if it sounds like a ballache.

Unreal is completely exposed so you can fix your own engine bugs and rewrite the engine etc. OP is a moron. Unity is just as unintuitive if you have no idea what you're doing, and especially if you don't already know C# or whatever Unity uses. I am an artist, I can make a game work enough to be sellable in UE4. OP can probably code, but I doubt he'd be able to make anything without the help of an artist, hence UE4.

>that explains a lot actually
you're fucking retarded and know nothing about programming
I can't even argue with this honestly. I learnt coding completely out of necessity, I'm an ideas guy by trade and my specialty is art and creative design.
>unity, the engine made for retards who don't know anything about programming
SEETHING.

get gud

Can you use Unreal without the store though?

They're just tools, use the best tool for the job. And be honest with yourself user, you're not going to ship a game with any game engine

>OP can probably code, but I doubt he'd be able to make anything without the help of an artist, hence UE4.
Fuck off fag, I'm not going near that frontend and blueprints again for the foreseeable
>without an artist
Nigga I was an artist before I ever "learned to code"
>Tim Sweeney
>literally who
>Shilling Chinese Cyberpunk ripoff
Mmhmm.
>*sometimes* even a unity game
Wise.
I just can't seem to fathom why Unreal engine is so popular? Nothing seems to work outside the box bar what they already set out for you. Hell, I couldn't even find a way to not use blueprints without installing the latest Visual studio, and even then I got some weird fucking error text, despite the fact that Visual Studio was working fine. So, fuck it. And fuck Epic Launcher too. Faggots trying to shill their gay frontend all the time..

>literal who

>ceo of epic games
>implying he wouldn't actively shill his own product
I think that picture describes you pretty accurately.

>he can't into C++
just admit that you're a brainlet

It's a fucking launcher you retard.

>replying to every comment
Boy sure is S E E T H I N G in here

>I just can't seem to fathom why Unreal engine is so popular? Nothing seems to work outside the box bar what they already set out for you. You're just too stupid that's all man

Stick to Unity, you'll be able to make a game that fits your "skills"

It's my thread and I want to keep it alive retard.
I don't have a problem reading code, what I do have a problem with is reading epic's gay forced blueprints.
Gee thanks :^)

>I don't have a problem reading code, what I do have a problem with is reading epic's gay forced blueprints.
But you don't have to use blueprint, what's the issue? You can script just as well in C++ if that's what you prefer

When I tried setting it up to program with C++ instead of blueprints it would just crash every-time. So fuck it.

Because is way better at performance than unity. Thats all.

>incredibly un-intuitive design
Literally what?
Unreal 4 does a lot wrong, but it's user friendly as fuck.
>"you can make your own games so long as you don't want to change player speed or anything else for that matter teehee!"
Literally takes two seconds to change player speed, jump height, gravity, fucking anything character based is easy as fuck. Hell even the animation re-targeting is amazing.

best engine to dev with on linux?

Unreal magical checks for anything to work are fucking hidden allways.

Sure, change the gravity direction lmao

Shit nigga, I scrolled through the entire list and only managed to change acceleration and jump height. They got a good system out the box, granted, but I just really don't like it's UI it's too cluttered. I can't really imagine making something out of Unreal Engine which doesn't feel like anything else made with Unreal Engine and I can't honestly say the same for Unity.

Unigine or most open source engines will work natively on Linux
I have heard mixed things with Unreal and Unity working on Linux. Overall they are free to download so give them a shot
