Why is Shenmue praised for its cinematic qtes and walking segments but other games insulted?
its ok when ___ does it
Because for some reason, QTEs in Shenmue didn't piss people the fuck off. I don't know why, but their implementation was decent. Not all QTEs are shit. RE4 comes to mind too, although they weren't perfect there.
because it's comfy, has soul, and is kino.
Shenmue came out over 20 years ago
Shenmue pretty much invented, or at least made QTEs popular.
Japs can get away with murder.
>why does one group of people praise this part of a game when another group of people criticize this part in other games
Geez idk op. Maybe people have different taste.
Should I get Steam version or is the Dreamcast version emulateable and runs well.
I don't care about "graphics", in fact I prefer the original look. It's more about QoL and what runs better for me.
Just get it on Steam, they've modded it for widescreen amongst other things. It launched a bit buggy but it's pretty good now.
Shenmue invented the QTE
Steam for the trading cards, duh
But is the DC version perfectly playable? I read some say no and some say yes on the ReDream emulator.
Don't know if serious but I don't care about or pay attention to that stuff at all.
Because you can fail QTEs in shenmue, if you're doing a chase, you can hit 50% of them and not fail. And it usually leads into a funny cutscene of Ryo knocking down a lady.
Emulate, HD remaster is dog shit, still is buggier than emulated version and most importantly has fucked up voice overs and music.
There are absolutely no advantages to HD version, it's a downgrade in absolutely every form and way, avoid this trash and just emulate.
doesnt really matter which you pick cant go wrong with steam or dreamcast desu
shenmue 1 HD dont have to change the disc anymore iirc so its kinda seamless
shenmue 2 HD has QoL stuff like skipping cutscenes without needing NG+
People do give Shenmue a lot of shit for precisely those reasons.
People are more lenient when it comes to Shenmue because the game is so much more than the sum of its parts. It was the first game to genuinely feel like a living breathing world, and in that regard I do not think it has been topped in the 20 years since it's release.
Sounds like emulating is the way to go
Can you elaborate on this though
>and most importantly has fucked up voice overs and music.
Why did Shenmue III have to suck bros. It wasn't supposed to be this way
it's cinematic AAA garbage and you know it. God i fucking hate weebs. Everything's always bad when white people do it, and when it's japs it's fucking genius.
>Virtua Fighter combat
>Cinematic
u wot m8
People like you are retards. There's a difference when that's all you offer, or it being the standard for the most popular games vs having them once in a while, same with "sjw" shit. There isn't an agenda or trend with this stuff, they are just doing it because they want to.
Yes, it's ok because it's not shoved down your throat, and on top of that there are obvious differences between western and eastern games and people have preferences. Seek help.
For some reason the fuck faces at d3d (people that made the port) could not properly convert the voice over audio properly.
It was so bad that the fans themselves started making Shenmue audio restoration project (just look it up on google).
As for the music, the game mostly had MIDI styled songs that played through DC soundchip, so they have their own specific timing, reverb, loudness etc. this is of course also absolutely fucked in the remaster and is all over the place with wrong timing and reverb, this wasn't fixed, only slightly adjusted in patches and sound terrible.
The remaster outside of that still have hundreds of big to small issues that are absolutely not present either in the DC version or when emulating.
Its a slower-paced game, so the QTEs are uncommon, and welcome when they pop up. QTEs in action games are what people have problems with because it takes away what would have otherwise been gameplay.
Glad I asked. It seems like there's not a single remaster out there that is objectively as good and better than its original.
It's not, though, it gets criticized often for its pacing and mechanics. Even at the time. It was just hailed as a one-of-a-kind experience on release.
In first place, I think the assumption that QTEs were always seem as bad is wrong.
When QTEs first became a thing, the gaming community generally loved it. The first games who did it (Shenmue included) did it pretty well.
But if you take games like Shenmue, RE4 and God of War, they actually have good art direction, soundtrack, likable and memorable characters in a fun gameplay experience regardless of QTE segments.
Maybe some will disagree regarding GoW because it has indeed a very poor gameplay compared to others of the same genre such as DMC and Ninja Gaiden, but I do think it was good enough in other aspects (like the overall sense of brutality and aesthetical appeal) to make it a good experience, and the QTEs were indeed a big part of it because as you smashed butons, Kratos smashed mithological beasts limb by limb, and this was indeed fun.
The reason QTEs began to be hated is because like any trend it was overused and it became an excuse for lame ass cinematic gameplay in uninspired souless games.
That too. Once anything becomes a trend people get sick of it. MGS1 was groundbreaking, then by the time 4 came out people shit on Kojima like crazy for it being a movie. People loved open world, now that open world became a standard people are trashing open world again.
The biggest reason qtes were hated was because a shit ton of games with them made them instant death. Shemue(2 at least) let kid me fuck up a lot of qtes before actually resulting in a failure.
How was 3?
who wants a key for 1 and 2?
Because the game literally told you if they were coming or not for one. And for two they had very good indicators and usually were very thin in appearance.
yes pls

It's a temp email but if you don't wanna send it there you can drop it here and I'll play the "who gets it first" game
sent :^)
Was Shenmue 3 any good?
Seems like people were hyped as fuck for this after all those years but then nobody talks about it anymore.
shenmue's a meme bro
only got the rep it did because it was on memecast that no one had and died quickly
will you actually play it?
Yes, do you want me to jump into it as my next game? I just beat FFX and Megaman Legends so I'm looking for the next one.
Although After beating 1 I will most likely wait on 2 as I never play games in a series consecutively.
It's a bit shit. I stopped about half way through. I might go back to it later, but the thing that really kills it for me is that they changed the combat system from virtua-fighter like to a new system that is actually a nightmare to play. It's extremely slow, there is a noticable input delay on all your actions, and there are no throw moves anymore.
