Not entirely true, mario still had paper themed traversal abilities and the world was played up as a pop-up story book play. The problem is that they've taken the paper aesthetic to a degree so far removed from what people liked about it in the first place

What about the paper folding abilities in ttyd (the second game with the paper moniker)

Pisses me off at how pretty this game is. All it needed was a turn based system, xp, and the white outlines removed.

It is pretty much a rehash of SS/CS, but with shinnier graphics and a new gimmick.

That's the point though, Nintendo could have made the games like old PM, where it was for ALL demographics instead of a specific one. It just doesn't make sense from a business perspective, and as shown, just splits the fanbase even further.

They were explained in universe as curses and were abnormal, with characters freaking out when Mario did them. From their perspective, the world wasn't made out of paper. It was just presented to the player as such.

look at the story, it's all goofy comedy with no seriousness, it's impossible to get stuck since you don't need to bother with the battle system, the artstyle also appeals to this younger audience.
it's for extememly young kids who have a very short attention span.
