I guess with computers implanted in everyone's brains (Keropoyo and Selcoms in general are pretty sketchy) they can probably put people into virtual spaces without they even realizing it. Still, all that said, I wonder about the way the scientist/spy was threatened by guns when he first got there and how Mario's machine was able to damage the "real" world above if it is just VR.
