I could careless who Shulk ended up with as Fiora and Melia are bland; but Dunban and Reyn are the real winners with Vanea and Sharla.

Mostly because Fiora is an awful character. That doesn't really justify making Shulk out of character or reducing Melia to nothing but a Shulk obsession, though. The ideal solution would be to just make Fiora less shit.

She's actually got a personality that's different from anyone you've seen back in colony 9, and extensively colony 6 as well. Why wouldn't you be interested in her? Either way, you find out that Fiora is alive through some miracle. That miracle just so happens to be reincarnation, or something like that. If YOU just found out your first crush just ended up coming back from the dead, what would your first instinct be?

And aside from the fact that both Shulk and Fiora are both the only characters who are used as hosts for Zanza and Meyneth, two gods of the world who share opposing ideals, and would only fit the thematic sequence of the two joining together in everlasting unity, I wouldn't see Shulk dating Fiora in the finale. Really the only reason why Shulk x Fiora exists is to give necrophiliacs a reason to jack off. And if I were Melia, finding out that Shulk was revived the same way Fiora did but without the weird cybernetics, I would get the fuck out of there as soon as possible as well. No girl wants to be boned by Jesus.

Story wise you were exposed to Melia longer. You got to see her undergo a personal test for the crown, get betrayed, lose her family, watch her species die, and despite all that she kept going and kept fighting. Not just for herself and her species, but for the one man she fell in love with. In the end it wasn't really who she ended up with. Shulk was a fuckhead that never told his friends about his visions that could possibly save their lives. After all that, by god, you just wanted that poor girl to be happy.

They give you like 40 minutes to get to know the bitch and she has NOTHING unique about her at all. She's the most generic "idyllic waifu" character ever in the brief time before she gets skewered.

It's like a parody of stupid JRPG stories. Like they wanted to ape FF7 but didn't want to give you tens of hours to actually connect with the character they kill off.
