Literally just perfect Paper Mario / Mario RPG system. Badges were always great and the action commands were perfect. Don't go too crazy with the action commands like with the later Mario and Luigi games, but give em more depth than just A presses.
Maybe add a parry system, if you see a certain symbol or effect when an enemy does an attack you can parry it and avoid damage all together, some attacks can't be so you'll have to just simply block it. I like what bug fables did and made it so the closer you got to timing your blocks, the more damage you reduced.
Add some more interesting badge, maybe badge combinations, more party members, and a non status aliments / element system and you got yourself a fucking good RPG system.
