>always felt like gaming is the only thing i truly enjoy doing on my freetime
>my whole lifestyle and personality is built upon it
>lately feel as if i should sell off all my gaming belongings and "be better", but can't find a single thing more worth my time
What do?
Thoughts on gaming as a hobby/pastime?
do you go to the gym?
if you don't and start the quick gains are similar to a video game grind
"be better" is a subjective thing, of which you have two choices:
>A) you have a desire to be something else or an absolute need for a change to be made
>B) society has told you this and this is ideal and such and such is not
Making lifestyle changes is only worth it if you can go with A. If it's B, you'd only be going down a path of regret and frustration anyway. Especially if you make major sacrifices in the name of something that uncertain like selling all your shit.
If you're happy as you are and it's sustainable, keep it up. If you're not, or you can identify changes that absolutely need to happen, then identify what you need/want first. Not only will you then have a specific goal to work towards, but you won't be hitting yourself in the dick over making rash decisions for nothing.
unironically this
you don't need to stop gaming but start working out and get Zig Forums
in reality chasing pussy is the funnest game there is
I learned to turn wrenches. Motorcycles are the shit and so are well-handling cars. Now its just what I do when im too worn out to ride or wrench and now Zig Forumstards all blend together into this massive blur of aspergers and short sightedness from my point of view
>chasing pussy is the funnest game there is
Happiness is derived from gratefulness.
I've always played videogames, still had time to party, getting a girlfriend, go out with friends. When I married I never stopped playing, when my son was old enough to hold a controller I started playing with him, and while on quarantine, my wife joined us and now we play together.
>my whole lifestyle and personality is built upon it
Building your personality on one thing is a shit thing to do. Even if it's something positive like being Zig Forums, if all you have is that one thing then you're probably an intolerable cunt. Mix it up, do different things. Trading in one personality defining hobby for a different personality defining hobby is just turning yourself from one type of intolerable faggot into another.
thats why they spoiler tagged it so faggots dont get triggered alert someone got triggered alert wake up the rest so the triggering can be noticed
What unique joys can vidya give that other mediums of pastime can not?
I can think of a few but I want your thoughts on it.
>chasing pussy is the funnest game there is
lol how old are you bro? that shit gets old pretty quick. once I hit 24 I was done with it
How’s middle school?
I haven't found any, though I get more satisfaction when I start learning a new science.
Make games. Make art. Write stories. Take photos. Make films. Play an instrument. Sing. Build furniture. Take up carpentry. Volunteer. Read. Build houses. Teach.
You're graduating into being an active subject, instead of a passive object.
Have gone through the same loop you described many time in my life.
>I’ll change
>I’m going to stop playing games
>I’m going to start working out
>I’ll spend more time learning my craft from online courses
>I’ll go for runs more often
>tomorrow I unplug my games and never plug it back in
I usually entertain these idea’s when I am going through an especially tough time.
You are not going to be able to just up and cold turkey on video games if you have been doing it all your life.
Slowly ease off if you want. If you are in a lull in gaming take advantage of the moment, it’s easy to ease of when an anticipated game isn’t around the corner.
But realize that you will probably always have an interest in gaming, try balance to with life and work, find things that give you instant gratification in a similar way to video games.
Painting, drawing, crafting, writing, working out, socializing, coding, the list goes on, find new distractions. Ease them into your days
You sound like a casual gamer who plays boring FPS games. Video games are art to me. I cannot “quit” enjoying art.
What if I'm so incapable of creating things/being creative that I have completely given up? I barely even do my job without being told what to do anymore.
Anything I ever tried creating has turned out to be a waste of time or too ugly to have been worth making. I am incapable of creating.
Diversify your hobbies.
I’ve cut out a couple of genres I didn’t care for and then put that time into other things, like gardening, exercising and painting.
Now I appreciate my time playing because I’m not doing it every waking second.
the idea that video games aren't a valid hobby or activity worth spending time on is a brainchild of an extremely outdated mindset from the Boomer era that refuses to embrace or even acknowledge the march of technology and the development of new entertainment mediums.
stop listening to older generations' opinions on video games. they are not valid. they have never been valid. they will never be valid. once they all die out, video games will be universally accepted like film. film was originally snubbed in favor of theatre, you know.
Cars are just the origin money pit to distract you from what ZOG is doing. They are the original video game. Man was born to ride a horse, not a machine.
You aren't, you just buy into a few misconceptions about creation.
First, you probably think it's a "talent." It's not. Nobody is born with it. It's developed. You can do it.
Second, you seem to think that what you're doing now has to be beautiful, immediately. But no beauty can be made without first studying how to create, and beauty isn't the goal of the creative study. Your practice, your learning, is going to be ugly. And that's not only fine, it's good. Get past expecting and demanding your first steps to be pretty. If there is any advantage that people who start learning something creative when they are children have, it's specifically that children don't give a fuck if their drawing is ugly, or their concerto sounds like shit. They just keep going. Hell, they fucking love it.
If you want to explore these things, perhaps consider reading "Art & Fear." I believe it would help address many of the doubts you seem to have about your own creativity.
Pursuant to which, here is an anecdote from said book.
>The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two groups. All those on the left side of the studio, he said, would be graded solely on the quantity of work they produced, all those on the right solely on its quality. His procedure was simple: on the final day of class he would bring in his bathroom scales and weigh the work of the “quantity” group: fifty pounds of pots rated an “A”, forty pounds a “B”, and so on. Those being graded on “quality”, however, needed to produce only one pot — albeit a perfect one — to get an “A”. Well, came grading time and a curious fact emerged: the works of highest quality were all produced by the group being graded for quantity.
>It seems that while the “quantity” group was busily churning out piles of work-and learning from their mistakes — the “quality” group had sat theorizing about perfection, and in the end had little more to show for their efforts than grandiose theories and a pile of dead clay.
My man, I know completely how you feel but you dont have to throw away video games to be better. Now I’m at the state of doing multiple things (writing, going outside, etc.) as a way to build other skills or hobbies but I still am mainly a vidya faggot. I think you should try looking into different shit and just try it out. Chances are, if you do put your heart into trying out new things, you will find something else that’s also enjoyable and/or valuable. But if you’re just doing shit but not actually giving it a chance, then you’ll just subconsciously put yourself in a situation where you can’t escape out of only playing video games.
I love how you even changed the dates.
>First, you probably think it's a "talent." It's not. Nobody is born with it.
Then why can't every 6 year old write operas? Stop buying into the 'talent doesn't exist' nonsense. Some people are better at some things and no matter how much work you put in, you can never achieve the same level. That's just how it works. Doesn't mean you should not pursue your interests but this psychobabble needs to stop
Do photography lad. It's such a low effort high reward hobby. Even if you're completely mediocre and other photographers can easily tell that you're mediocre, most non photographers will think you're absolutely amazing and talented even if you only know the bare minimum compositional theory and have a cheap used DSLR. It's that easy.
I'm sorry you feel that way, but I'm actually not, because frankly I don't give a shit what you think about anything.
>lately feel as if i should sell off all my gaming belongings and "be better", but can't find a single thing more worth my time
Grow up. I don't mean as in gaming is for kids. I mean as in stop giving a shit about what some boomers expect of you and do what you want
