Why does Zig Forums always hold up what Japan buys as "the thing"? Who fucking cares? Japanese devs =/= Japanese consumers of video games. Japan has terrible shitty taste for gacha as it is. Consider that there is no PC or Xbox market in Japan at all, which means that this leaves them with PS4, Switch and mobile phone games. Well guess what? Japan aren't really buying PS4 either so Japanese games like Persona 5? Nier: Automata? Bloodborne? Dark Souls? Sekiro? REVII? REmake 2? DMC5? KHIII? Ace Combat 7? Yeah, WE are the ones playing those games. Japanese devs make games for US now, their work is mostly lost on their own people who would rather be playing mobile games.
TLOU2 being shitty aside, Fuck what Japanese consumers think, they don't buy shit. They don't know shit.

It doesn't seem to appeal to East Asian tastes at all. I think part of it is the cultural expectation that fiction should communicate a clear moral message of some kind rather than simply telling a compelling tale, and that characters should get the fates they "deserve". Some had issues with this in the West too but more were willing to engage with it for what it is rather than what they wanted.

It doesn't help that the JP version is censored (less gore, shortened sex scene). The game relies on an intense presentation to sell its themes. If my version of the game has been watered down, I would have been pretty pissed off, and would have docked marks from any review I left for that alone.
