Persona 5

I don't know how to reconcile how disappointing I found so much of P5, only for Royal's new bits to be almost everything I hoped for from the first HD, bigger budget Persona game.

Also, Persona 5 thread I guess.

That's not Melia!
You're a phony!

The first time I played P5 all the way through was with P5R, right after I finished P4G and I really enjoyed it. I think the game focuses more on a large scale story more than the small interpersonal stuff but I also think it makes for a better story overall. I don't really know why it gets so much hate because I love both games. I'm currently getting through P3 FES and THAT'S a game that's a bit rough.

Personally the characters didn't grab me, the plot didn't really have much momentum after Kamoshida and the ending was super clumsy, both in story and mechanical execution. But then Royal managed a better antagonist, actually tied his plan into the social sim side of the game, made it mechanically relevant to his dungeon and managed to make it intensely personal for everybody involved. Plus the boss was way more fun than wailing on Jet Alone for an hour. I just wish the whole game was so tightly executed.

Melia is my bird bride so he can’t have her

I can definitely agree that the third semester was pure kino. I guess I just liked the grandiosity of the P5 ending and getting swept up in the big battle. I do kind of hope P6 is a smaller scale game though, maybe small city style kind of like P3.

This and P4G are the only games that have made me cry. Why the fuck is that? I never get emotional over anything other than music.

P5 just gives me a headache. And i'll never play royal because i'm not buying a PS4 for one game, so P5 will stay a disappointment for me.

It's a tricky spot. Kind of hard to recommend a 120 hour game when the first 100 hours are more or less a mixed bag that's been out for years, just because the last 20 are so goddamn good. It's certainly not going to change your mind if you hated 5 vanilla but if you're like me and were kind of on the fence over it, it'll be the nudge.

I think making one but with Marie should be easier

I'm normally not a fan of QTE-style moments in games but I'm a sucker for how Royal did it. The fist fight between tired, defeated, now powerless friends.

She's not yours, she belongs to Joker. Who will never, ever make a canon decision either way and leave her in limbo.

I really like how the Azathoth boss incorporated the revamped baton pass mechanics (Okumura did too but it was more of a damage check). By comparison, I wish Adam Kadmon wasn't so straightforward and later scripted. Was hoping for a third awakening instead of the persona merge, it would've been kino overdrive.

Is there anything more kino than realizing the lyrics to the boss themes for the new ending are dueling ideologies, with Throw Away Your Mask the only song BGM track in the game not from the party's perspective?

Azatoth was the only time in the game that I actually took advantage of the free attack on the 4th pass, even had me thinking about stuff like deliberately leaving up targets for others to tee off on. Really slick design, probably the most mechanically engaging boss in the game.

Bro I started tearing up when he realised he had failed. The whole section is just fantastic.

It was fun having to think through each phase and giving a full baton pass to someone for a huge punch to the head. All the talking as well where he's pleading individual team members to understand his point is just amazing.

Also when you enter the last infiltration and this starts playing

It's fucking incredible and you can't help but get emotional.

They encouraged you to shift characters around too, which I think was so you'd hear more of his party specific dialogue.

I honestly think it was a time thing. P5 feels sort of rushed in a lot of places however the third semester probably had about 4 years of Dev alone to make so it ended up really great. I think this is such a common issue with persona in that they start making games on an older system but it takes so long that they always end up releasing after the system stops being relevant. Hopefully P5 pulled them in a shit load of money to make something as good as royal all the way through. Also Akechi is very good in royal compared to OG.

what the fuck did I read

Poetry, user.

Fuck you I won't read this shit today.

I'm in the middle of my P5R playthrough. I skipped vanilla because I knew an enhanced edition was coming. It's definitely the best Persona game gameplay wise but the cast/writing is kind of disappointing. Ann is bland as fuck. The way they force Makoto down your throat as a "genius Queen" is ridiculous and makes her incredibly unlikable, Ryuji is the first genuinely unlikable right-hand man and I don't know what the fuck they were thinking having two fucking party members thirst after Ann so hard (Yusuke/Morgana). The character designs are also a mixed bag. There's some very high points (Joker/Ann/Morgana) and very bland/low points (Haru/Kawakami/Ichiko.) Enjoying the fuck out of it still. The hubs, visuals, music, and palaces are ace.

Get interesting hobbies, work out and try hard to do a self check when you're talking about something you're interested in. People do like to hear about the stuff you're doing but there is a limit. If they aren't asking questions back about what you're talking about then try and ask them something about themselves and force yourself to be invested in it. There are some very good occupational therapy courses that can help with this (I have multiple family members with the tism) and it helps a lot.

I'd say it gets really good after the halfway point and the characters introduced after Makoto are better (not amazing but better). The third semester is some of the best content that's been in a persona game so make sure you look up how to get the third semester going otherwise you'll miss out. You can find spoiler free guides.

I just finished royal and I'm jealous that you get to experience it all for the first time.

I thought you just had to max out the counselor social link? The Goro twist has been spoiled unfortunately but not in detail. I know people love him so I'm looking forward to seeing what the deal is with him and obviously looking forward to Futaba.

Futaba's great, unless you're playing in English. Then she's not so great. Makoto gets better once you get some distance from QUEEN and her introduction. Kasumi's a surprisingly good addition, though she doesn't really become important until much later.

I guess that's good to hear about Makoto. I actually liked her "punk" transformation when she awakens her persona but then they lean into that whole queen detective thing. I forgot to mention Kasumi. So far she's actually been pretty likable and cool but she still feels awkwardly inserted. It's still a massive improvement over Marie who's inclusion was a complete disaster.

You gotta max Akechi and Kasumi as far as I know so make sure you do asap. Akechis slink is gated off at some points so don't worry if he stops showing up as an option for a while.

I went with the romance option for Futaba and it was really cute. I like english VA even of she says cringe shit, I still think it's automatically cute. I like Haru a lot as well and find her s-link very endearing. Hope you have as much fun as I did though man, I thoroughly enjoyed the shit out of the game right to the very end.

They made the wise decision to keep Kasumi more or less in her own little box until her story arc comes in new content where everything was new anyway, so it wasn't any trouble having her interact with people. Honestly I wish she was more central and the Royal story wasn't sectioned off in its own area, they're both high points. Her romance is impossibly adorable too. Also, you need to get her to rank 5 to get the bonus Royal stuff. So get on that.
