Gaming laptops are good nowadays

Gaming laptops are good nowadays.

Stop having a kneejerk reaction against them.

they arent absolutely garbage like they used to be, but theyre still overpriced with thermals that will have an effect on system lifespan

but why would i buy one? what's the point? if i wanted to do work i'll buy a macbook or an xps and if i want to game on the go i'll get a switch

People who claim laptops are overpriced always compare it just to the price of their tower, never consider the fact that there's also screen and keyboard. Also they love to ignore the optical drive and wireless capabilities on the mobo.

>screen
fair point but most are not worth enough to make the price of the laptop worth it
>keyboard
they are almost always cheap rubber dome keyboards
>optical drive
how many gaming laptop actually have an optical drive in year 2020
>wireless capabilities on the mobo
you can buy desktop mobos with wifi for pretty much the same price as mobos without wifi

They're maybe good now, but desktops are still better and cheaper and upgradeable.

>lifespan
Fair point, but the fact that you're buying one complete device means you can rather cheaply insure it for 5 years, something that's a major hassle when you're buying desktop parts individually.

I don’t mind them but if you use a gaming laptop for productivity, you are doing something wrong.

desktops are not cheap. you can buy an acer nitri5 for 600 dollars with a gtx1660. a destop would cost you the same

What do you mean?

>desktops are not cheap.
>a destop would cost you the same
So which one is it then? You only showed why desktops are better since you can have a system with the same price, except you can easily upgrade it and pick each individual parts unlike a laptop.

And by looking up on the Acer website, I can only find the 1650 non Ti version at $599. That's pretty okay but I can see building a desktop with the similar spec but cheaper.

anything with gpu costs over 1000€
what desktop can be built with 400-500€ which is base price for cheapest non-gamer laptop

desktops need monitor thats +$100 dollars
also desktops arent portable i can take my games anywhere i want with a laptop. i can also upgrade the ram and ssd in a laptop. some laps allow for gpu upgrades but those are higher end models.

I just don't understand why anyone would need a gaming laptop though?
At home you can have an actual pc.
>But what if I travel
I think that if you travel you should care about something else than playing videogames like a stupid manchild.
>B-but I also use it for work
A common 600$ laptop can be used for most forms of work. And if you need more than that your company should think about that for you.

build me a desktop right now for 500usd monitor including.

lets see the most powerful graphics card for a 500 busget would be a rx 570 or a 1650. laptops yes deaktops very expensive

>desktops need monitor thats +$100 dollars
1080p monitors are around $80-120 these days. They're cheap
>also desktops arent portable i can take my games anywhere i want with a laptop
While it's true to some extend, mini-ITX is a thing you know. And why would you bring a gayman laptop anywhere, those things are heavy as hell
> i can also upgrade the ram
Most modern laptops has soldered ram. You can't change the motherboard, CPU, or GPU on most laptops

Come on man, 3kg is heavy?

I want one so I can play the final fantasy ports/yugioh/tabletop in my bed or on the couch since I still have my pc but I don’t wanna spend $600 on an rpg/card game machine

no laptops have soldered ram that are gaming. lol is this apple support. laptops are not that much heavier around 4-5 pounds on average. mini itx is just stupid are you going to carry your monitor with you or is this a living room pc?

>I can upgrade the ram and ssd in a laptop

Yeah fair point song you can’t upgrade anything in a desktop

The key to a good long-lasting laptop is a good large and solid case that allows airflow and can be easily taken apart to clean and mod.
All thin laptops will start heating up 6 months to 1 year in and you will notice significant slow down in 2 years and likely failure or crippling slowdown at 3.
What components it has is up to your budget and preferences and make little difference on its lifespan and sustained performance.

I don't have a PC right now but I'm a brainlet and I'm afraid to build one, bros

Literally legos, the hardest part is mounting the heatsink and that’s right at the beginning

desktops are limited to gpu upgrades. you cant upgrade a cpu on the desktop if its an old mobo. laptops are cheaper nowadays thats its better to spend 500-600 on a good budget laptop then 300 on a new i5 i7 cpu.

What if I break something. I want to stream shit like Mario Retardy.

You're forgetting the fact that laptops literally never have proper CPUs. Some have started to get real GPUs, but on the CPU front it's still all gimped mobileshit.

You're still paying way more per performance than a desktop. If you have absolutely no way to have a desktop computer, i.e. constantly traveling, it makes sense, but otherwise it's retarded.

if you can't upgrade a cpu on a desktop you sure as fuck can't upgrade it on a laptop

6core 9300f can beat the shit out of most budget gaming desktops.

>Come on man, 3kg is heavy?
Yeah. My x230 is like 1.3 kg. I don't want to bring a 3 kg laptop + other shit on my backpack everyday. They're usually big and cumbersome which is the opposite of having a laptop.

I really don't see the point of gaming laptop. You might say that gaming laptops are better now, but every laptops are better in general. They're more powerful, more portable because they're getting lighter, and generally can serves as a desktop replacement these days. If I want to play games I just use my desktop. I don't play games outside anyway so why bother. You have to be a incredibly busy person that travels a lot and really desperate to play games to buy a gaming laptop. Like PC gamers aren't people who travels a lot and generally shut ins anyway.
> you cant upgrade a cpu on the desktop if its an old mobo.
Then just upgrade the mobo, what's so hard about that?

You won’t break anything if you watch exactly 3 youtube videos

>Lenovo Legion Y540
>144Hz
>i5 9300H
>1660 Ti
>16GB RAM
Undervoted by -0.150v and limited the boost to 3.7GHz, with the undervolt I'm literally only losing around 3FPS with my own testing

Why would you compare it with a budget dekstop CPU then

dude just overvolt and add some cooling and overclock to the max
why make a slow system even slower

because regular desktop cpus are very expensive. an i5 will set you back around $300
