Even Tolkien's own work sets up the primacy of Man, with the Elves being destined to fade. Outside of TTRPGs and video games, fantasy is trending strongly to the human side of things. Many fantasy authors disregard nonhumans like Elves in favor of simply creating unique humans. Indeed, in some writing circles, using derivative nonhumans is actually looked down on. After all, there are very few cases where a nonhuman is warranted. It's almost always better to just use a human. This was the past and is the future.
