Just played the first game and I want to know, why such praise? Sure, the detail put into the environemnts is impressive, it's one of the few games which while striving for realism doesn't fall into the uncanny valley (at least in the cutscenes, still looks awkward in-game).
But besides that? Simplistic gameplay, after an hour of playtime you'll never encounter anything new gameplay-wise (no new types of puzzles, enemies etc), ludo-narratively inconsistent, story, setting and characters are extremely generic. The game just isn't interesting in any regard besides SOME of the aspects of its graphics/visual direction.
compare it to the games it competed against when it came out and you'll have your answer

/thread Chest high walls and sepia was an interesting time

Ok, in that case I can't understand it even more. There were a lot more interesting games that year.

It was never THAT good. But journalists and e-celebs are constantly trying to prove videogames are art, vg are serious business, the citizen kane of vg, 10/10 IGN. IMO it was somehow good, Uncharted with zombies. 2-3 interesting moments, nothing more. Every arc the new partners died, violence everywhere, ok.

It was the first game with a perfect balance between gameplay, story and emotional weight It's as emotional as full interactive movies like Telltale and Quantic Dreams games It's as deep and well written as movies or shows can be Its gameplay sections are as challenging and satisfying to play as any games that solely focus on gameplay. It also perfectly merges elements from survival horror, stealth and tps genres

First game is normie cookie cutter. Second game is where it's truly at, OP.

The gameplay has aged poorly, but your opinion re. the story and particularly the characters is unpopular. It's a fairly basic story on paper, but it's told very well, and the characters are some of the most compelling ever animated.
The sequel is far more ambitious in concept and polishes the gameplay enormously. At twice the length it can't always maintain the precision pacing of the original, but nonetheless I unironinically consider it to be the single best example of storytelling the medium has ever seen. You should consider playing it even if you didn't like the original much.

there's been better games than TLOU coming out since the 80s, and the early 2010s were no different.
I think it was because everyone expected some Walking Dead ripoff when we got a cozy father daughter story. Then every game had to have some parent-child dynamic thereafter.
Noah Morales
Because it's a great game, cope.

>It's as emotional as full interactive movies like Telltale and Quantic Dreams games maybe, if you get attached to the characters. otherwise, nah >It's as deep and well written as movies or shows can be not even close and nor will it ever be unless they get a good writer >Its gameplay sections are as challenging and satisfying to play as any games that solely focus on gameplay. It also perfectly merges elements from survival horror, stealth and tps genres nope. it's a mediocre jack of all trades, the crafting system in particular is jarring, but the simplistic level design doesn't help it keep fresh for the duration of the game
>and the characters are some of the most compelling ever animated. they're good but not some of the best ever. be real, it's not even the best naughty dog did, Uncharted 2 is better in regards to characters
lmao I'm doing the same iwth OP. I specifically bought the game to play it with my dad and the environments are breathtaking and look absolutely fantastic even in 2020, and Elllie is a really great character, but outside of that there is not that much engaging... the overall plot and world-building is boring at best and cringy at worst, Joel isn't that interesting of a guy and the gameplay is just "okay". It does its job but not much more. If it didn't have the insanely good visuals for the time no one would have given a damn.

Based as fuck. TLoU 1 is good, but part 2 completely blows it out of the water. It's barely close
Connor Wood
>ludo-narratively inconsistent
Such as? Joel acts exactly as what he is and what he set out to do, and so does Ellie. She doesn't believe everybody is good and the world is fine. She's out to get to the Fireflies and she knows people will have to die for them to get there 'cause the world is full of evil hunters. Joel isn't Michael from GTA.
Jack Torres
>absolutely fantastic even in 2020 not really, they weren't all that great for 2014 either, considering witcher 3 came out a year later
>maybe, if you get attached to the characters. otherwise, nah Getting attached to the characters is an absolute requirement for enjoying any drama in any medium.
Easton Price
Not an argument. Most of you fanbois played on easy.
It wasn't that simple when it came out seven years ago. You probably enjoy mario which is incredibly simple but still good. Get over yourself, it doesn't have to be sekiro complexity to be interesting.
James Richardson
Both the TLOU games exhibit much stronger gameplay when played at the highest difficulty level you can tolerate. Every encounter becomes tense and stressful, every enemy becomes a serious threat.
Jose Cooper
>why such praise? Because it's a great game.
Hudson Young
I didn't really get attached to any of the characters in The Darkness 1, in fact Jenny was quite annoying, but I still felt bad for them webm related is on grounded
to me it just looks like whoever is playing it is terrible at it, I never had any fight like that
Joseph Diaz
>why the praise because son.yggers will blindly suck up everything that slides out of sony's asshole and call it filet mignon.
Elijah Morris
Even as far as 'movie games' go there's much better than TLOU out there. Heck, even something like the OG Max Payne games are better at delivering a movie feel all, nevermind something like The Darkness 1 or MGS3
