any opinions or tips with a red mage? I've never used one before. I had fun with a black belt before, though.

I want to play this game so much

You can beat the game with practically any party setup and enough knowhow. That said, I wouldn't combine Black Mage and Red Mage, as that's just redundancy. White Mage has some useful spells over Red, but Red has enough damage to not feel the loss of Black as keenly.

Black Belt is great and one of the most cost effective classes in the game, as you'll be going unarmed all the time with him by level 10. Armor is still good, but he has shitty choices most of the time. Despite a high HP pool, he'll be kinda glass cannon-y for the early parts of the game. However, once you reach mid-game, his scaling turns him into a murder machine.

Red and White is good for that setup, as Red can supplement heals and damage until Black Belt reaches that tipping point. Red's normal attack damage over Black makes him better for farming too, if that's your jam.

Red Mages are good in FFI, from what I hear. Generally they're versatile.
I think I might be one of the few games where they get access to most/all of the high-end magic, but don't quote me on that.

Wow, thanks for the info my man. I think I will probably switch out black mage for red mage then

>not using the 8 Bit Theater party

Red mage is a fairly weak charecter while black belt can be crazy OP. That being said my first and only playthrough of the game was
>Red mage
>Black belt
>White Mage
>Black mage
Red mage falls off hard in the late game but hey he looks cool.

if i'm going to meme i'm going to meme with 4 fighters

Red Mage is an early game powerhouse that falls off real hard once everyone gets a class upgrade. Red Wizard is bottom of low tier

I think the sweaty speedrunner strat has 2 Red mages, it depends on if you want to see more spells using black and white or if you just want to beat it. If you plan to use EITHER white or black don't get any red just ad a black belt of thief.

When I was a little kid I played the game with 4 fighters every fucking time for some reason. Didn't even try actual non-meme party comps until emulating the GBA remake.

That is super wrong.

Nah. Their magic caps at level 5 of 9 or something.

Black magic in general is kind of tricky in this game because of how it works on the DnD principle of spells per rest. That means you won't generally throw around a lot of black magic at random encounters, but it is handy for certain obnoxious groups of monsters.

Later you get items that can cast spells. Against bosses, the black mage can do decent damage if you know the enemy weakness but if I recall Karys is weird and not actually fire element. Still, the damage your fighter and blackbelt do to single targets is competitive enough that magic isn't essential.

Yeah I basically only use spells for buffs or physically resistant enemies

Don't listen to the haters, Red Mage is a great class that helps carry you through the entire game. He gets all the black spells that you would really want, and those extra spell charges for healing will save your ass. Red Wiz also gets the Life spell, which is your only method of reviving in the game without going back to town. You will be very glad that you have that in the last dungeon.

He's also a good person to give the Masamune to. Last time I played it, my Red was keeping up with my Knight and Ninja all through the game, and we just shit stomped on Chaos.

Go with Red Mage, and replace White Mage with Thief. It's the perfect party, trust me.

fighter/red/white/black
any other party is wrong

i'm not exactly a new player i've beaten the game twice, just never used a red mage

Thief doesn't really do anything special outside of running away, though.

I used red mage as out of combat healer and secondary dps, works fine for that
My party was red boi, white boi, black boi, karate man

Red starts nice but ends up just being a source of additional FAST spells later on.

The NES version is bugged so the Red mage can cast magic just as good as the B/W mage. I highly recommend him.

this

endgame is a cakewalk compared to the early dungeon crawl, not sure why people wouldn't optimize the hardest part by having a single red for utility

That guy is meming.

Go with 4 fighters.

Moneybags over here

He's right, Thief sucks. You're carrying dead weight with you until class change so you can get an inferior Knight who can cast Haste.

fighter, black belt, white mage, black mage
