Man these Digimon threads have been pretty continuous the past week. Play Digimon World 1 if you want a monster raiser. It's fairly cryptic and grindy at times though so be warned. Alternatively play Cyber Sleuth if you want a JRPG. It's two games in one so lots of content. But it has way too much unskippable dialogue, excessive anime tropes, and the standard JRPG issues; so don't expect it to be perfect. Your tolerance to those issues will decide how much fun you have.

A lot of the characters are cliches. The mannerisms of most of the humans are also meant to mimick how characters express themselves in modern anime. A lot of the plot, particularly the stuff related to EDEN, seems like it comes from a fairly generic anime. Notably the original Digimon anime actually avoided a lot of this stuff.
