Both are acceptable really. One puts you on the edge, while the other is a constant reminder of your previous failures.

Doesn't running out of lives just make you start from the beginning of a level instead of a checkpoint?

I think modern mode is better? It's better know how much time you died than just restart checkpoint after all your lives are gone. I think new crash will have manual saves anyway so you can save after each mission. So you get unlimited lives in each mode but modern mode tracks your deaths.

Seems like a perfect solution to me, especially if this mark of shame also triggers increasingly hand-holding difficulty scaling the more you die to gently remind you of how much of a casual shitter you are.
